Northern MPs demand enhanced security as border insecurity worsens

Leaders from the Northeastern region have warned of worsening insecurity at the borders of Kitui, Garissa and Tana River counties, following a wave of violence that has left several people dead, others injured, and property destroyed.

This, as tension continues to rise along the Mwingi–Garissa Road corridor.

In a strongly worded press statement, the Northeastern Parliamentary Group said it was “deeply shocked by the escalating violence” in the region, describing the situation as a serious deterioration of security and stability.

The leaders noted that innocent civilians have borne the brunt of the clashes, adding that this senseless loss of life and suffering inflicted upon families and communities is unacceptable.

The group extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones, saying they stand in unwavering solidarity with all affected communities.

They warned that continued violence risks eroding years of peaceful coexistence among residents in the affected counties.

The lawmakers condemned the attacks and acts of violence, particularly those driven by incitement and lawlessness.

They cautioned that such actions undermine unity, stressing that violence can never constitute a legitimate means of resolving disputes.

Residents in the affected areas were urged to remain calm and avoid revenge attacks.

“We call upon all communities to exercise a high level of restraint, desist from retaliatory actions and embrace dialogue and lawful conflict resolution mechanisms,” the statement read.

The leaders emphasised that the preservation of peace and social harmony remains a collective and non-negotiable responsibility.

At the same time, the parliamentary group called on security agencies to act swiftly.

“Security agencies must act with urgency, firmness and absolute impartiality to restore law and order,” the leaders said, demanding immediate investigations into the incidents.

They further insisted that justice must be served without bias.

“There must be comprehensive investigations followed by the swift apprehension and prosecution of all individuals responsible, without fear or favour,” the statement added.

The lawmakers stressed that accountability is key, noting that it is essential not only to deter further violence but also to restore public confidence in institutions.

Describing the situation as dire, the group warned that urgent action is needed to protect lives and property.

“Peace, stability and security remain the pillars upon which development and prosperity are built,” they said.

The MPs also reaffirmed their commitment to finding a lasting solution, stating they are ready to engage leaders from neighbouring countries to foster dialogue, strengthen community relations and advance sustainable peacebuilding initiatives.

They further called for unity, emphasising the need for collaborative leadership and a shared commitment to peace in addressing the crisis.
