“Just ask ChatGPT.”
It is a phrase that is increasingly becoming second nature in everyday conversations, offered as casually as “Google it” once was.
Whether in offices, classrooms or homes, more people are turning to the AI tool as a first point of reference when they need quick answers, clarity or even guidance on complex tasks.
What began as a curiosity for many has quietly evolved into a daily habit. From drafting emails and summarising reports to brainstorming ideas and answering personal questions, ChatGPT is steadily embedding itself into how people work, learn and interact with information.
For a growing number of users, it is no longer an occasional tool but a constant digital companion.
“I was not using it so much before, but now ChatGPT is my best friend,” says Grace, reflecting a shift in behaviour that many users can relate to.
“I use it at work for efficiency, and when I’m at home, I use it to chat and ask personal questions. It has been helpful so far, and I enjoy using it.”
Her experience mirrors a broader trend of users embracing AI tools not just for productivity, but also for convenience and accessibility.
Tasks that once required hours of research or consultation can now be completed in minutes, often with simplified explanations that are easier to understand.
For Eric, the transformation has been particularly significant in academic and professional work.
“For me, ChatGPT is a lifesaver. The many documents that I used to go through, spending days and even months trying to understand, can now be simplified within minutes. It really shows how much technology has changed our lives. School work has been made easier; it helps summarise assignments and even revise for exams.”
The shift is also being felt in business and entrepreneurship, where speed and efficiency are critical.
Jane, a small business owner in Nairobi, says the tool has helped her streamline operations and improve customer engagement.
“Running a business means you are constantly multitasking, and ChatGPT has really helped me manage that,” she explains.
“I use it to draft marketing messages, respond to customer inquiries and even generate ideas for promotions. It saves me time and allows me to focus on growing the business instead of getting stuck on small tasks.”
Instead of navigating multiple sources, users can now rely on a single platform to break down complex ideas, generate insights and even provide tailored responses.
As adoption continues to grow, ChatGPT is following a familiar path taken by earlier digital innovations, transitioning from a novel invention to an essential everyday tool.
For many, it is no longer a passing trend, but a practical solution that is redefining efficiency and transforming how knowledge is accessed and applied in daily life.
As this happens, a new global digital report indicates that ChatGPT has moved beyond novelty status to become a routine, everyday tool for hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
According to the Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update Report by DataReportal, the scale and frequency of generative AI usage have surged dramatically, with billions of people now actively engaging with such tools.
The report estimates that there are about 2.42 billion active generative AI users globally, equivalent to nearly 29.2 per cent of the world’s population.
Within that rapidly expanding ecosystem, ChatGPT remains dominant. The report shows that the platform alone accounts for roughly 1.15 billion monthly active users, while a majority of users, about 63 per cent, rely exclusively on ChatGPT among large language model platforms.
This level of engagement suggests a fundamental shift in user behaviour, where AI tools are no longer accessed occasionally but integrated into everyday digital routines.
The report notes that generative AI adoption has grown by 141 per cent over the past year, driven by the addition of approximately 1.4 billion new users.
“Active GenAI users have increased by a hefty 141 per cent over the past 12 months,” the report states.
The report stated that the growth mirrors earlier shifts seen with social media and smartphones, where initial curiosity evolved into habitual, daily use.
The report emphasises that generative AI technologies only became widely accessible to the public about three and a half years ago, making their current penetration particularly striking.
Despite ChatGPT’s dominance, the report also notes that the broader AI ecosystem is diversifying.
Around 662 million monthly users rely on alternative platforms and do not use ChatGPT regularly, reflecting growing competition from tools such as Gemini, Claude, and regional platforms.
However, even with this competition, ChatGPT’s central role in daily workflows from writing and research to coding and customer support signals that generative AI is becoming infrastructure rather than an experiment.
The report further highlights that a significant portion of the global population already uses some form of AI, yet over 1.5 billion people have not fully adopted standalone generative AI tools, suggesting further room for growth.
The findings reinforce a broader digital trend: AI is following the same trajectory as search engines and social media tools that began as innovations but quickly became indispensable.
As adoption accelerates, the report stated that generative AI and particularly ChatGPT, is no longer a passing trend but an embedded part of everyday digital life for a growing share of the global population.
