Reforms at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions have started bearing fruit with a recognition for exceptional financial management at the 2025 Financial Reporting Awards.

Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Igonga, who received a Certificate of Recognition at the awards on behalf of the ODPP, welcomed the honour, calling it a validation of ongoing administrative and financial reforms.

He reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining strict financial discipline across the ODPP and ensuring that the office meets the highest standards of probity and accountability.

The institution received a Certificate of Recognition within the Commissions and Independent Offices category, specifically for its adherence to the International Public Sector Accounting Standards cash basis framework.

This distinction follows the attainment of an unqualified audit opinion, a feat that signals the highest possible level of financial accuracy and compliance with statutory reporting requirements.

During the ceremony, promoters of the FiRe Awards commended the ODPP for its rigorous financial management.

An unqualified audit opinion – commonly described as a “clean” audit – represents the highest level of assurance an auditor can provide, confirming that an entity’s financial statements are free from material misstatement and fully compliant with all relevant accounting standards.

The DPP noted that the honour was a testament to the hard work of the office’s administrative teams and reaffirmed his pledge to uphold the principles of the constitution.

He stated that the ODPP remains steadfast in its commitment to sustaining strict financial discipline and ensuring that it continues to meet the highest standards of prudence and accountability in the management of public resources.

“Recognitions of this nature play a vital role in reinforcing confidence in independent institutions tasked with upholding the rule of law,” Igonga said. “For the ODPP, a key pillar in Kenya’s criminal justice system, the award not only affirms sound financial stewardship but also enhances institutional credibility.”

The FiRe Awards are organised by a coalition of leading professional and regulatory bodies, including the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK), the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) and the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board of Kenya (PSASB).

The primary objective is to promote best practice in transparency, governance and disclosure across the public and private sectors.

By promoting best practices in governance and disclosure, the organisers aim to bolster public trust and enhance the credibility of both private and public sector entities.

This year’s recognition places the ODPP amongst an elite group of independent offices that have successfully aligned their operations with global accounting benchmarks.
