Pastor T Mwangi, the lead preacher at Life Church International, has sparked a heated debate across social media following a stern sermon regarding the state of modern church services.
In a video clip currently circulating online, the cleric criticised the shift from spiritual devotion to physical performance, specifically targeting what he describes as "aerobics" on the altar.
From Altars to Aerobics
During the sermon, Pastor Mwangi expressed his frustration with how contemporary praise and worship sessions are conducted. He argued that the spiritual essence of the service has been replaced by physical gymnastics, which he bluntly labelled as “ufala” (a Swahili term for foolishness or nonsense).

“We have turned praise and worship into aerobics. Hiyo ni ufala. Ukisoma bible, praise is a weapon lakini hizi sarakasi zililetwa na watu hawana roho.”
The pastor reminded his congregation that, according to the Bible, praise is a weapon intended for spiritual warfare. However, he noted that this original purpose is being lost to "antics" that have more in common with a gym session than a religious gathering.
The Secular Influence
A significant portion of the pastor’s critique focused on the influence of secular culture within the church. He suggested that "sarakasi" (drama or antics) was introduced by individuals who do not possess the Holy Spirit.
According to Mwangi, the church has mistakenly taken people directly from secular clubs and placed them on the sacred altar. This transition, he claims, has effectively turned praise into a form of secular entertainment rather than a divine connection.
“Tuliwatoa kwa club tukawaleta kwa madhabahu na wakageuza praise ikakuwa entertainment,” he said.
He observed that the current generation often approaches praise with a sense of "worldliness," focusing on the "fun" aspect rather than the spiritual significance.
Defining True Worship
The sermon also addressed the distinction between "praise" and "worship." Pastor Mwangi cautioned that while the younger generation views praise as a time to enjoy themselves, they often treat worship as a "boring" segment of the service.
He offered a different definition, stating that worship is an echo designed to carry a person’s spirit and connect it directly to the Spirit of God. He emphasised that God does not just dwell in the melodies of the songs, but specifically within the sincere praise of the believers.

"God dwells in praise, and it is not just songs; it is telling Him what He has done. Worship is a vehicle that can carry your spirit and connect you to the spirit of God."
