Former Somalia presidential Advisor Abdulahi Mohammed Nur/HANDOUT

A senior advisor to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has resigned, citing mounting political challenges as Somalia approaches a critical period in its governance calendar.

Abdulahi Muhamed Nur, who served within the presidency at Villa Somalia, announced his departure amid ongoing political consultations in Mogadishu.

In remarks to local media, Nur pointed to what he described as a growing impasse among key stakeholders, warning of potential consequences if consensus is not reached.

“We are approaching a cliff if consensus is not urgently reached,” he said, underscoring concerns over the direction of current political negotiations.

Nur further cautioned against prolonged indecision, adding: “The nation cannot afford another cycle of uncertainty driven by delayed decisions and competing mandates.”

His comments reflect broader anxieties linked to Somalia’s history of electoral delays and institutional disputes.

The resignation comes at a sensitive moment, with the mandates of several federal institutions set to expire on May 15.

Discussions are ongoing regarding whether to extend these mandates or agree on a new electoral framework, but no formal resolution has been announced.

Somalia has faced similar challenges in recent years. The 2021–2022 electoral cycle was marked by significant delays and political disagreements, while earlier transitions—including the 2017 indirect elections and the post-2012 federal restructuring—were also characterized by complex negotiations among federal and regional actors.

There has been no immediate response from Villa Somalia regarding Nur’s resignation.

However, local media indicate that the former advisor may issue further statements or proposals in the coming days, potentially contributing to the ongoing dialogue.

Negotiations over electoral models, timelines, and institutional mandates remain central to discussions among federal and regional stakeholders.

Villa Somalia, which serves as the seat of the presidency, houses senior advisors responsible for supporting executive decision-making on governance, policy, and political strategy.

While resignations from such positions are not uncommon, they often signal underlying tensions within the political landscape.
