Machakos County remained largely calm despite tension reported in some parts of the country over anti-fuel hike protests.

A spot check by the Star indicated that residents were going about their businesses as usual across the county.

Transport along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway remained smooth and uninterrupted.

The towns included Mlolongo, Kyumbi and neighbouring Kitengela in Kajiado County.

Security was, however, intensified in the county, with police formations patrolling towns and the highway.

Public service vehicles and motorists using major roads in the county were also operating normally.

Despite the smooth flow along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway, the Star observed relatively low traffic on the Nairobi Expressway on Tuesday.

Most motorists appeared to avoid the expressway amid concerns over possible protests.

There was also a visible police presence, with officers stationed at entry and exit points in Mlolongo.

Some of those who spoke to the Star said they were weary of political protests in the country.

“I can’t engage in politics. Those protests appear politically instigated. I am focused on earning a livelihood each day,” Jane Kio said.

However, isolated incidents were reported in Machakos town, where police officers used teargas to disperse a group that had gathered and appeared to attempt to burn tyres ahead of demonstrations over the fuel price increase.

There were also attempts to place barriers along the Machakos–Kitui road, which did not succeed.

Police and sections of the group were later seen in brief running confrontations in the area.

Beyond Machakos, tension was also reported in parts of neighbouring Makueni County along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway.

Police officers were observed patrolling, especially in Emali, Makindu and Kibwezi markets, areas that are often affected during demonstrations.

Nzaui area police commander Agnes Kunga urged residents to keep away from demonstrations, saying police would take action to maintain order.
