Kenyan filmmaker Abel Mutua and his wife Judy Nyawira’s daughter, Stephanie Mumbua, has impressed netizens after revealing how a school assignment on financial literacy changed her perspective on money and parenting.

A Lesson That Shifted Her Perspective

In a video shared by Nyawira on social media, Mumbua excitedly recounted what she learned during the first day of her holiday programme for teenagers.

She explained that the class focused on money management, including budgeting, investment risks, and financial planning.

However, one assignment stood out — students were asked to calculate how much their parents had spent on them since birth.

“Day one of school was good. We learnt money tips and the importance of risk when you want to invest. We learnt the value of budgeting, and how to structure a budget plan. Then we were given an assignment to find out how much we cost as individuals,” she said.

“I Will Not Ask for Anything”

After attempting the exercise, Mumbua admitted the results shocked her.

She began adding up her school fees, clothing, accessories, and other personal expenses — and quickly realised the scale of her parents’ investment in her life.

“I will be very humble. I will not ask for anything for the rest of my life,” she said.

She went on to highlight how even everyday items contributed to the total cost.

“Everything I am wearing — from the clothes to the shoes — and even this ring… I started estimating and adding it up, and I was like, ‘Whoa, I am quite expensive,’” she added.

Her reaction, which blended humour with genuine realisation, resonated with many online, with netizens praising her maturity and self-awareness.

Mumbua, who transitioned from the 8-4-4 system to the Cambridge curriculum last year, continues to draw attention for her thoughtful outlook at a young age.ALSO READ: Unfiltered Truths: What Mumbus Wishes Adults Knew About Teen Mental Health

A Parenting Style That Stands Out

Earlier this year, the teenager also captured public attention during her 16th birthday celebration — a milestone her father marked in a unique way.

To celebrate the occasion, Mutua fulfilled a long-standing promise by giving his daughter her first driving lesson.

First Driving Lesson at 16

Videos shared by Nyawira showed Mumbua behind the wheel, carefully navigating a quiet road under her father’s guidance.

“This was the highlight of her birthday today. Daddy had promised her her first driving lesson once she turned 16… and he delivered,” Nyawira wrote.

From the back seat, she documented the calm and encouraging interaction between father and daughter.

Lessons Beyond the Wheel

In the clips, Mutua is seen patiently guiding Mumbua through the basics — from controlling speed to safely stopping and parking.

“So now ease and put the brake… pole pole,” he instructed, before guiding her through the parking process.

The lesson ended on a light note, with Mumbua joking:
“I did so well, guys! Where’s my licence?”

Nyawira praised her husband’s calm teaching style, hinting humorously that she might not have had the same patience.
