The 2nd Pan-African Media Councils Summit in 2025./FILEThe Media Council of Kenya and its partners will host the first Pan-African Media Summit in Nairobi from May 13 to 14, bringing together journalists, editors, and media stakeholders from across the continent.
The summit, organised in partnership with the Kenya Editors Guild, the Kenya Union of Journalists, and the Association of Media Women in Kenya, is expected to attract participants from more than 20 countries.
According to a joint press release issued on Thursday, the meeting will provide a platform for discussions on the state of media in Africa, including emerging opportunities, challenges, and the future of journalism on the continent.
The organisers said the summit comes at a time when the media industry is undergoing rapid transformation driven by artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and changing audience habits.
They noted that while these changes present new opportunities, they have also contributed to the spread of misinformation and placed pressure on traditional media business models.
“Across Africa, media organisations are feeling the squeeze,” the statement said. “Declining revenues, rising costs, and growing pressure from market and political forces are taking their toll.”
The summit, themed “Information Integrity, Digital Platforms, and Media in Africa," will focus on identifying practical solutions to strengthen media sustainability and uphold professional and ethical standards.
Participants are expected to explore ways to protect information integrity and support the viability of media organisations, with discussions aimed at addressing the evolving challenges facing the industry.
The organisers said the meeting is expected to generate recommendations and policy proposals to guide governments, regulators, and industry players in responding to the changing media landscape.
They added that the outcomes are intended to support the development of media systems that are resilient, independent, and accountable.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will take part as a knowledge partner, contributing expertise on information integrity and governance.
Regional and international bodies, including the East Africa Press Councils and the World Association of Press Councils, are also expected to participate.
The organisers said the summit will provide an opportunity to advance discussions on media freedom and responsible journalism across Africa.
“A free, independent and sustainable media is at the heart of any healthy democracy,” the statement said.
