A serving police officer has been arrested over a violent robbery in Nairobi’s Embakasi area that left a man nursing gunshot wounds, in an incident that has raised fresh concerns over crime within the ranks.
Police said the attack occurred in the early hours of April 6, 2026, in the Wimasi area within Pipeline Estate. The victim told investigators he was heading home at around 12:30 a.m. when he was confronted by three men known to him.
The suspects allegedly blocked his path and attempted to snatch his mobile phone, prompting a confrontation. When he resisted, one of the attackers reportedly drew a firearm and shot him twice in the right shoulder.
The assailants then fled with his mobile phone. The victim was rushed to hospital, treated, and later discharged in fair condition.
Following the incident, police launched an intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest of the suspect.
Detectives said they are investigating the officer for possible arraignment on robbery with violence charges. A search was conducted at his residence as officers seek to recover the firearm believed to have been used in the attack.
Police described the incident as isolated and vowed that justice would be served, noting that mechanisms exist to deal with officers involved in crime.
In a separate but equally dramatic incident in the same Embakasi area, a bodaboda operator was robbed of his motorcycle at gunpoint in Tassia.
The robbery occurred at around 1:00 a.m. on April 7, 2026, at Gota Stage within the Riverbank area. The rider reported that he was approached by a man known to him by the alias “Captain,” who demanded his black TVS 125cc motorcycle.
When he hesitated, the suspect allegedly produced what appeared to be a pistol and threatened to shoot him before taking off with the motorcycle.
In a bizarre twist, the suspect abandoned another motorcycle at the scene and fled toward the Greenspan Mall area.
The rider, assisted by fellow operators, reported the matter to police and handed over the abandoned motorcycle at Tassia Police Post.
The suspect later returned without the stolen bike and demanded the return of the motorcycle he had left behind. Upon learning it had been taken to the police station, he reportedly fired a shot into the air before fleeing again.
During his escape, he commandeered another motorcycle belonging to a rider identified only as “Night.”
Police officers who responded to the scene recovered one spent cartridge and a live round of unknown calibre. The abandoned motorcycle remains in police custody as detectives pursue the suspect and attempt to recover the stolen bikes.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
