Drowning incident

A herder died as he tried to rescue a drowning calf from a river in Sagana area, Kirinyaga County.

The man drowned after jumping into Kanyiri River in an attempt to rescue the drowning calf, police said on Sunday.

The calf was in a herd of cattle that was grazing in the area.

Police said it slipped into the river before it swam back to the riverbank, leaving Lekishan Kererwa, 28 who had jumped in there to rescue it.

He drowned before the body was retrieved and moved to the mortuary.

The body was swept downstream before it was found and retrieved, police said, adding it was moved to the mortuary for other procedures.

And a man died in a hotel swimming pool after he dived there in a tragic incident in Loiyangalani, Marsabit county.

The incident happened at a hotel in the area on Saturday, April 4.

Police said Alkano Abudo Kufo, 30, was in the company of a group from North Horr and had visited the facility when the incident happened.

He is said to have dived into the swimming pool and drowned therein.

His body was later retrieved and moved to the mortuary pending investigations and an autopsy.

Police said they will investigate the incident as they visited the scene and questioned the management of the facility.

Elsewhere in Kenol area, Muranga county, a man was found dead in a shallow stream after a suspected murder.

Police said the body of the man was found on Saturday night.

A team that responded to the scene found a lifeless body with no visible physical injuries of an unknown male adult aged about 26 lying in a shallow stream with his face submerged in the water.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending identification and autopsy.

Meanwhile, police are investigating the discovery of a body at the banks of River Nzoia in Ugenya, Siaya county.

Police said the body was that of a woman, and it is not clear how she died. She is believed to have been washed to the scene. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an identification and autopsy.

Dozens of people have drowned in the past month in incidents linked to the rains.

Many others were displaced in the incidents, officials say.
