[Photo / John Chesoli]KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto’s car was involved in an accident in Taita Taveta County on Friday evening while travelling to Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, reportedly involving a stationary trailer.
According to Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, the trailer had no signage.
“Now the driver and turnboy of the trailer have caused a huge loss to the country and Captain Ruto himself,” he said.
Speaking at Mombasa Hospital after visiting the KPA boss, Murkomen called on motorists to be cautious while on the road, especially during the festive season when travel increases.
“He is stable, according to doctors. He has undergone all medical investigations, and the conclusion is that he is stable and out of danger,” the CS said.
He said Captain Ruto will be under observation for 24 hours. He condoled with the family following the loss of their daughter in the accident.
He also called on all Kenyans travelling to exercise caution on the roads.
Murkomen, who was accompanied by DCI Director Mohamed Amin and Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, was in Mombasa to assess the security situation in the region when he received the news.
“We are here to ensure security for all at the Coast.”
Murkomen is expected to meet the chief security agents before visiting Makupa Police Station later.
“We must all protect ourselves. All must do their part to ensure safety,” Murkomen said.
“We believe God will give Captain Ruto a quick recovery so he can continue serving Kenyans,” Murkomen said.
He said the Transport Ministry is working with NTSA to help reduce road accidents.
Most accidents, he said, occur due to human error, which can be avoided. These include lack of signage, poor parking, overspeeding, and failure to adhere to traffic rules, among others.
“We must all be careful when using our roads. Traffic rules must be obeyed,” he said.
