Wiper leader, Kalonzo Musyoka has vowed to support a single presidential candidate from the United Opposition, signalling a renewed push for unity ahead of the next general election.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Kalonzo said the opposition’s main priority is not individual ambition but building a strong, functional system that delivers for Kenyans.

He said the ongoing consultations within the coalition are aimed at developing a “formula” to identify the most suitable candidate.

On his own presidential ambitions, Kalonzo maintained that he is ready to step aside if another candidate is chosen. He described himself as a team player with a track record of supporting others for the greater good, even after pursuing his own bids in the past.

“If I’m not the one, I will support, I am known for that,” he said.

While he did not provide specifics, he hinted at a possible blend of scientific methods, negotiations and consensus-building to guide the decision-making process.

“We talk, and we will get a formula,” he said, adding that Kenyans should remain hopeful and even pray for unity among opposition leaders.

The Wiper leader said while several leaders within the United Opposition have expressed interest in the presidency, the ultimate goal is to agree on one flagbearer through a structured and inclusive process.

Among those eyeing the top seat are Fred Matiang'i, Martha Karua, George Natembeya and Eugene Wamalwa.

Kalonzo acknowledged these ambitions but insisted that the coalition would not allow them to create divisions as the election approaches.

“This is a serious enterprise,” Kalonzo said, drawing parallels with the 2002 political transition that saw various leaders shelve their ambitions to back a single candidate.

He recalled how figures like Mwai Kibaki, Raila Odinga and others came together to form a united front that ultimately won the election.

At the same time, Kalonzo said unseating President William Ruto remains a key rallying point for the coalition.

He said the opposition is focused on ensuring Ruto serves only one term, while also addressing concerns raised by young people across the country.

He pointed to recent grievances among the youth, including allegations of extrajudicial killings, saying the coalition aims to restore confidence and justice for affected families.

“Our number one priority is unity of purpose and giving confidence to young Kenyans,” Kalonzo said.

Defending his appointment for the seat, he said his experience and leadership credentials make him a strong contender.

"It's not a matter of trying. This man is tried and tested. You also need a further figure, by the way," he said.

As the country edges closer to the next election cycle, all eyes will be on how the united opposition navigates its internal dynamics and whether it can replicate the unity that once propelled it to victory.
