AFC Leopards players celebrate in a past match /HANDOUT AFC Leopards stirred belief back into their title chase with a slender 1–0 triumph over Kariobangi Sharks at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, tightening the noose on arch rivals Gor Mahia.
Tyson Otieno’s 58th-minute finish, curved from a tight angle after a flash of space opened inside the box, proved decisive in a match that swung between dominance and frustration for Leopards.
The 12-time champions controlled long spells, pressed high from the outset and created enough chances to win comfortably—but had to survive late Sharks pressure to secure the result.
“It was a tight angle, but I didn’t hesitate,” said Otieno. “In those moments, you don’t think too much—you just react. I saw the space open for a split second, and I went for it because at this level, you don’t get a second chance.
From the outset, AFC Leopards dictated the rhythm, pressing high with intent, circulating possession with purpose, and carving out enough openings to have put the game beyond reach much earlier. Yet their lack of cutting edge kept Kariobangi Sharks alive, allowing the contest to hang delicately in the balance until the final stages.
Early pressure saw Kelly Madada force a near miss in the 4th minute, while sustained attacking sequences pinned the Sharks deep. But a disruption in the 23rd minute, after goalkeeper James Ssetuba went down injured, briefly cooled their momentum.
When play resumed, Ingwe continued to probe but lacked precision in the final third. Missed opportunities from Ssenyonjo and Alushula reflected a growing pattern of dominance without killer instinct—until Otieno changed the script.
Even after taking the lead, the Leopards were stretched. Sharks pushed forward with urgency, forcing a tense final phase that tested Ingwe’s defensive discipline and composure under pressure.
Otieno admitted the psychological weight of the title race is now unavoidable. “You can feel the pressure building with every match,” he said. “But this is where strong teams show character—by staying disciplined and focused.”
Head coach Fred Ambani praised the maturity but warned of lingering inefficiencies. “This was about managing pressure as much as winning,” he said. “We controlled the second half well, but we should have finished the game earlier.”
He added, “We are not there yet. Every match now must be treated like it decides the season.”
For Sharks coach William Muluya, frustration came down to missed moments. “We competed well, but one lapse cost us,” he said. “At this level, hesitation is punished.”
Captain Feiz Opande echoed the sentiment: “One mistake changes everything. We must be sharper.”
Elsewhere, Shabana FC continued their impressive rise with a narrow but crucial 1–0 win over Murang’a Seal FC at Gusii Stadium. Matthew Tegisi’s 58th-minute strike proved decisive, extending Shabana’s strong run and lifting them to third place with 43 points.
In front of a passionate home crowd, the Glamour Boys tightened their grip on a potential top-four finish, turning Gusii into a fortress in the closing stretch of the season.
At the Ulinzi Sports Complex, Ulinzi Stars delivered one of their most convincing performances of the campaign, dispatching Sofapaka FC 2–0 through a clinical Paul Okoth brace.
Okoth struck in the 34th minute before doubling the lead in the 67th, combining sharp movement with composed finishing to seal a vital win that pushes the soldiers further away from relegation danger.
The result signals a steady resurgence for Ulinzi, who are rediscovering structure and confidence at a critical stage of the season, while Sofapaka’s struggles deepen amid growing inconsistency.
Earlier, the rescheduled clash between APS Bomet FC and Nairobi United FC ended in a goalless draw after heavy rain disrupted Saturday’s action, forcing both sides to settle for a point in difficult conditions.
As the league table tightens, Leopards’ resurgence, Shabana’s rise and Ulinzi’s steady climb have redrawn the competitive landscape. With the season entering its decisive phase, every pass, tackle and finish now carries the weight of ambition, survival, and destiny.
