Fifteen people have died following a horrific road accident near Dedan Kimathi University along the Nyeri–Nyahururu Highway, authorities have confirmed.

The crash involved a Nissan matatu and a truck carrying logs. Central Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati said emergency responders rushed the injured to nearby hospitals.

“15 people died on the spot, while others were taken to hospitals,” he said.

Police reports indicate the lorry swerved to avoid cyclists, leading to the collision. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

Initial reports had suggested 10 fatalities, but authorities later confirmed that the death toll had risen to 15.

The accident comes amid a spate of road traffic incidents across the country.

In separate incidents, seven people, including pedestrians, riders, and a pedal cyclist, lost their lives, while at least 14 others sustained serious injuries and were admitted to hospitals.

The Nyeri tragic incident has drawn condolences from national leaders, who urged citizens to exercise caution on the roads.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said, "Saddened by reports of the loss of 15 people in a tragic road crash near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, and our hope is for the quick recovery of the injured. Drivers, observe safety precautions. Any time you are on the road, remember your own life, the lives of your passengers and those of other road users are in your hands."

President William Samoei Ruto expressed his sympathies. “Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims of the road accident that occurred this evening near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” he said.

The President added that the national and county governments were engaging with affected families and would provide necessary support during this difficult time. “Pole sana,” he concluded.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula also mourned the loss, describing the incident as “grisly” and calling on road users to observe caution.

“I have challenged the NTSA to tighten road regulations, scrutinise road operations, and establish the status of vehicles and the level of professionalism among drivers,” Wetang’ula said.

He extended his deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and residents of Nyeri County, noting that the crash had “once again claimed the lives of citizens, rendering many dreams unattainable.”

Parliamentary Service Commission member Johnson Muthama offered his thoughts and prayers for the victims’ families. “May their families find solace during this difficult time. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua described the crash as a “difficult moment for our nation and the several families tonight.”

He called for greater care and caution on the roads and urged authorities to ensure road safety measures were accessible to every user. “One life lost is one too many. May the Almighty God rest the souls of our faithful departed in eternal peace,” he said.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly in areas prone to heavy traffic and pedestrian activity. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, with further details expected in the coming days.
