Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has defended the role of the Linda Mwananchi movement, describing it as a people-driven force committed to protecting citizens’ rights and holding the government accountable.

Speaking during the Linda Mwananchi National Delegates Conference (NDC) held on Friday at Ufungamano House, Owino dismissed claims that the movement is antagonistic to the state, instead framing it as a defender of ordinary Kenyans.

“We are not the enemy of the government. Linda Mwananchi is not the enemy of the state. Linda Mwananchi is the defender of the people,” he said.

The legislator told delegates that the movement exists to safeguard the rights and welfare of citizens, particularly those affected by injustice, inequality and state excesses.

He said civic groups like Linda Mwananchi play a critical role in amplifying the voices of vulnerable communities.

“Linda Mwananchi is protecting the rights of Kenyan citizens. Linda Mwananchi is fighting for justice on behalf of Kenyans,” he said.

Owino said the organisation has been at the forefront of demanding accountability in cases where citizens have lost their lives, adding that it has consistently pushed the government to take responsibility and support affected families.

“Those who are killed, it is Linda Mwananchi who is putting pressure on the government to compensate their families,” he said.

The MP also highlighted unemployment among young people, linking it to what he described as unfulfilled government promises. He said the movement is advocating for economic justice and opportunities for the youth.

“Linda Mwananchi is ensuring that every Kenyan gets employed because the government promised that every year it will be employing one million young people,” Owino said.

He said the movement is part of broader efforts to ensure government commitments translate into tangible outcomes for citizens.

The conference brought together delegates and grassroots organisers from across the country to discuss the movement’s agenda, including governance, social justice and economic empowerment.

Participants reiterated the need for sustained civic engagement to address systemic challenges facing Kenyans.

Owino highlighted the role of political leaders in supporting citizen-led initiatives and maintained that advocacy should not be misconstrued as opposition to the government.

“Defending the rights of the people should never be mistaken for fighting the government,” he said.

As the conference continues, delegates have expressed commitment to strengthening the movement’s presence across the country, with a focus on pushing for accountability, justice and inclusive economic opportunities.
