KCB FC will be looking to end a patchy run of form when they host Mara Sugar FC in a Kenyan Premier League clash scheduled for Saturday.

With only four points between them, the Nyayo Stadium clash brings together two sides still wrestling for stability and a meaningful late-season push in a finely poised 2025/26 campaign.

KCB currently sit 9th on the table with 34 points from 25 matches, having scored and conceded inconsistently, to leave them with a -2 goal difference.

Mara Sugar are 12th with 30 points from 24 matches and a neutral goal difference, reflecting a season built more on draws than dominance.

The bankers come into the match under pressure after a 2–1 defeat to Kenya Police FC. At the same time, Mara Sugar arrive unbeaten in their last five matches, setting up a clash of fragile momentum versus growing resilience.

KCB’s recent form reads L-D-D-W-L, a run that highlights their inability to sustain consistency despite flashes of quality, including a win over AFC Leopards.

Assistant coach Paul Ogai admitted the team’s inconsistencies have been costly but believes the solution lies in sharper focus and stronger game management. “We know we are not consistent enough,” Ogai said. “That is the main issue.”

He added: “We must stay focused for the full 90 minutes.”

Ogai also stressed urgency ahead of the fixture: “We cannot keep switching off in key moments.”

He further emphasised home advantage: “At home we must be stronger and more disciplined.”

Midfielder Nashon Alembi also pointed to mentality and execution as key issues affecting KCB’s push up the table, insisting the squad must respond immediately to avoid slipping further behind. “We are not where we should be,” Alembi said. “That is clear.”

He added, “We have to improve our concentration and decision-making.”

Alembi also stressed urgency: “Every match now matters. We must react.”

Meanwhile,  Mara Sugar have built steady momentum with a five-match unbeaten run (D-D-W-D-W), underpinned by improved defensive organisation and a growing sense of stability despite a draw-heavy campaign.

Their recent results include a goalless draw against APS Bomet, a 0–0 draw against Bandari, a 3–1 win over Sofapaka, a 2–2 draw against Bidco United, and a 2–1 win over Ulinzi Stars.

Forward Dennis Cheruiyot believes the team’s resilience has become their biggest strength heading into the away trip. “We are hard to beat,” Cheruiyot said. “That is our biggest strength right now.”

He added, “We respect KCB, especially away, but we are confident."

Cheruiyot also highlighted efficiency. “We know chances will be few. We must take them.”

Historically, KCB have slightly edged the fixture, including a 1–0 win in November 2025. Earlier encounters have been tightly contested, including a 1–1 draw in April 2025 and a dramatic 4–3 KCB victory in December 2024, reinforcing the fine margins between the sides.

Tactically, KCB are expected to approach the match more proactively, looking to use home advantage to control possession and push Mara Sugar back. However, their recent defensive lapses and inconsistency remain a concern.

Mara Sugar are likely to remain compact, organised, and patient, relying on structure and counter-attacking opportunities to exploit space.

Set pieces and transitions are expected to play a major role, given both teams’ recent inability to dominate games for long stretches.

KCB’s challenge will be converting spells of control into goals, while Mara Sugar will aim to remain disciplined and frustrate their hosts into errors.

The table context adds further weight to the encounter. KCB are chasing Bandari, and others level on 34 points, while Mara Sugar are trying to distance themselves from the lower half despite their unbeaten run.

Both teams view this fixture as a defining opportunity to shape the trajectory of their season, with pressure and ambition converging at a crucial stage of the campaign.
