President William Ruto has said Kenya is strengthening its investment environment as Balmer Healthcare Limited and India’s Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd announced plans to build a Sh26 billion tertiary care hospital in Eldoret.
The project, announced through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will see Balmer Healthcare oversee construction of the facility while Apollo Hospitals handles operations and provides medical specialists.
The planned hospital is expected to offer treatment across more than 20 medical specialties, including paediatric and adult care, and serve patients in Kenya and the wider East African region.
Officials from the two companies said the facility is intended to improve access to specialised healthcare locally and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
Balmer Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Koima Langat said the project aims to improve access to healthcare services within the country.
“This is a project to benefit Kenyans and transform access to healthcare. We are bringing world-class services closer to home,” he said.
Apollo Hospitals President for Group Oncology and International, Dinesh Madhavan, said the partnership is aimed at expanding access to specialised care.
“With our entry into Kenya, we aim to bring our expertise and personalised care closer to patients here,” he said.
The initiative is expected to be financed through support from an Indian bank, according to officials.
The announcement was made during the Kenya International Investment Forum in Nairobi, which brought together government officials, investors and development partners.
Ruto said the government is implementing reforms including tax changes, a One-Stop Investment Centre for investors, and measures to improve energy, education and export processing systems.
The project will be implemented in phases, including planning, construction, commissioning and operational rollout under Apollo’s brand.
