The Domestic Life of the “Bird Whisperer”
In a recent video that left TikTok users in stitches and awe, Magudha welcomed viewers into his modest residence in Kayole.
Unlike his outdoor appearances, where he is seen walking through the Nairobi CBD with birds on his shoulders, this footage showed the birds comfortably perched on his bed, furniture, and kitchen counters.
What truly captivated the audience was Magudha’s decision to assign the birds human names and personalities:
- Johnson: His most famous companion, a Black Kite named after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. Magudha refers to him as the leader of the household.
- Joan and Jaime: Two other female raptors. In a moment of candid honesty that resonated with followers, Magudha explained that he named “Joan” after a former girlfriend to ensure her memory stays with him.
Breaking Cultural Taboos Through Humor
The video has done more than just entertain; it has sparked a conversation about cultural perceptions of birds in Kenya. In many local communities, wild birds like owls and kites are associated with omens or witchcraft.
Magudha’s casual, affectionate interactions—calling them to eat or scolding them like children—have helped humanize these animals for a generation of social media users.
Despite his fame, Magudha’s journey remains grounded in his past. Having spent 13 years homeless after his mother’s passing, he views his birds as his primary family.
He feeds them raw meat even during times of personal financial struggle, a testament to a bond forged during his loneliest years on the street.

A Growing Mission for Conservation
Magudha’s TikTok stardom is a means to an end. He frequently uses his platform to advocate for:
- A Bird Sanctuary: A formal rescue center to treat injured birds that fall victim to city hazards like power lines.
- Social Empowerment: A rescue center for the “street community,” aiming to provide life skills and housing for homeless individuals.
With over 20 species rescued to date—including owls, storks, and pied crows—the Nairobi Birdman has transitioned from a street survivor to a legitimate voice for urban wildlife conservation in East Africa.
