Gor Mahia strengthened their hold at the SportPesa League summit with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Shabana FC at Nyayo Stadium, a result that could prove pivotal in the run-in.
On a Matchday 25 card defined by narrow margins and cautious football, the leaders combined resilience with efficiency to move 10 points clear at the top—an advantage that now places them firmly in control of their destiny.
Yet, while the gap suggests dominance, the broader picture across the league tells a more complex story.
Kenya Police FC ensured the title race remains mathematically alive after edging KCB 2–1, a result that keeps them within striking distance and maintains pressure on Gor Mahia. Though the deficit is significant, Police’s consistency means any slip by the leaders could quickly reopen the contest.
Elsewhere, the mid-table logjam tightened further. Bidco United and Sofapaka played out a goalless draw. At the same time, Mara Sugar and APS Bomet also shared the points in a similar stalemate—outcomes that underline the increasing caution and tactical discipline characterising this stage of the season.
Gor Mahia’s victory reinforces a growing sense of inevitability around their title push. However, the reaction within the camp suggests a team acutely aware that the job is far from complete.
Forward Jackson Dwang emphasised the importance of maintaining performance levels as the pressure intensifies.
“The race is becoming more demanding with every match and we understand that expectations are rising,” Dwang said. “We cannot afford to lose momentum at this stage because even a small dip can change the direction of the season.”
His remarks reflect a key theme of the run-in: consistency over flair.
With fixtures becoming tighter and opponents increasingly motivated—whether chasing the title, continental spots, or survival—each match now carries heightened significance.
Captain Alpha Onyango, whose decisive goal secured the win, echoed that sentiment, stressing the mental demands of the closing stretch.
“We have to remain consistent in every match because that is what separates champions from the rest,” Onyango said. “We are treating each remaining game as a final.”
For Gor Mahia, the implications are clear: maintain their current trajectory, and the title is theirs. But any lapse could inject fresh life into the chasing pack.
Head coach Charles Akonnor reinforced a message of caution, insisting that the points gap offers no guarantees.
“There are still many points available, and we must approach this period with the right level of concentration,” Akonnor said. “Our focus is on maintaining consistency in both performance and results.”
While the title picture sharpens, the consequences of Saturday’s results are perhaps even more pronounced in the middle and lower sections of the table.
The draws involving Bidco United, Sofapaka, Mara Sugar and APS Bomet do little to ease pressure on sides looking to distance themselves from danger. Instead, they prolong uncertainty, keeping multiple teams locked in a tense battle where a single win—or defeat—can dramatically shift positions.
For Shabana FC, defeat against the leaders leaves them with ground to cover in their campaign. Head coach Andrew Ongwae acknowledged the need for an immediate response.
“This result has highlighted the areas we need to address,” Ongwae said. “We must improve in key moments and turn our performances into results.”
His focus now shifts to consistency, a recurring theme across the league as teams navigate the decisive phase of the season.
