The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has dismissed claims that former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju was abducted, stating that he remained at his residence throughout the period in question
Speaking on the matter, DCI Director Amin Mohammed said investigations had established that Tuju was at his Karen home when reports of his alleged disappearance emerged.
“Following the family’s initial denial of access to Tuju’s residence, the National Police Service escalated the matter with utmost urgency and resolve,” he said.
Mohammed revealed that a multi-agency team comprising uniformed officers and plainclothes detectives was deployed late at night to secure the residence as investigators sought a court-issued search warrant.
“The homestead was fully cordoned off while investigators pursued a search warrant from the court,” he said.
According to the DCI, intelligence gathered during the operation confirmed Tuju’s presence at the residence during the entire period under scrutiny.
“Crucially, and based on intelligence, the DCI conclusively and without an iota of doubt established that Raphael Tuju was physically present within his residence throughout the period in question,” Mohammed stated.
He further noted that Tuju’s phone was switched off at exactly 6:18 p.m. on March 21, 2026, at a time when he was still at his Karen home.
The statement contradicts earlier claims suggesting that the former CS had been abducted.
“When confronted with the evidence, it became apparent that this was a carefully staged disappearance rather than a real abduction. He subsequently resurfaced when the narrative could no longer be sustained,” Amin added.
Authorities warned that such incidents divert critical security resources and create unnecessary public alarm.
“This is not an isolated occurrence. The DCI has documented several cases involving staged disappearances, which strain investigative capacity,” Amin said.
The former cabinet secretary was forcefully arrested barely hours after resurfacing. The arrest, captured by media and bystanders, was swift and intensely physical. Amin said the move followed findings that the information surrounding Tuju’s alleged abduction was false and had serious security implications.
“We acted after establishing that the claims of Tuju’s disappearance were not genuine. The provision of false information is a serious offence and poses a risk to national security,” Amin said.
According to DCI, the matter escalated after Tuju’s family denied police access to his residence, prompting the National Police Service to deploy a combined team of experienced detectives.
The late-night operation saw officers secure and cordon off Tuju’s Karen home to prevent any potential interference as investigators sought a search warrant in line with legal procedures.
