Kenyan hip-hop artist Octopizzo has defended the growing #NikoKadi movement, urging young people to remain focused on voter registration ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a recent statement shared on social media, the rapper emphasised that the initiative is centred on civic participation rather than political allegiance.

He clarified that encouraging young people to acquire voter cards should not be interpreted as support for any individual leader or political agenda.

Focus on civic empowerment

Octopizzo framed the movement as a fundamental exercise of democratic rights. He stated that civic engagement, including voter registration, is a responsibility that belongs to every citizen, regardless of political preference.
“Civic empowerment is a right, not an endorsement,” he said in his remarks supporting the campaign.
His comments come as the #NikoKadi trend continues to gain traction among young Kenyans, particularly on social media platforms where users share images of their voter cards and encourage peers to register.

Youth-driven mobilisation
The Niko Kadi campaign has emerged as a grassroots mobilisation effort driven largely by young people. The phrase, which loosely translates to “I have my voter card,” has become a popular way for first-time voters to signal participation in the electoral process.
Reports indicate that the movement did not originate from political parties but from online interactions, making it a peer-to-peer initiative that resonates strongly with the youth.

Across different parts of the country, young people have been organising group visits to registration centres, sharing information on the process, and documenting their experiences online.

Rising interest ahead of 2027

The surge in youth-led voter registration comes as Kenya prepares for the 2027 elections. Observers note that the increased participation reflects a shift from previous perceptions that young people were less engaged in formal political processes.
Octopizzo has previously been involved in voter mobilisation efforts, including campaigns encouraging young people to register in large numbers.

In his latest remarks, he reiterated that the objective of #NikoKadi is to ensure more young citizens are registered and ready to participate in national decision-making processes.

Separating participation from politics

By defending the movement, Octopizzo sought to draw a clear line between civic duty and political endorsement. His message underscores that registering as a voter is an individual right and a key component of democratic participation.
As the campaign continues to spread online and offline, it remains one of the most visible youth-led civic initiatives in the country ahead of the next electoral cycle.
