East Africa girls’ hockey champions St Joseph’s Girls Kitale thrashed St Charles Lwanga 7-0 as the Brookeside Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) term one games got underway in Mombasa on Tuesday.


During the game that was played at Shanzu Teachers Training College, Marry Adhiambo grabbed a brace with Aphlyne Ochiene, Mitchelle Jeptoo, Grener Audrey, Doreen Adhiambo, and Valarie Ludiara scored one a piece.

John Lusaka, the St Joseph’s coach said: “We expected to score more goals in this game. I promise that you will see more in the upcoming games. We mean business here. We want to lift the national title.”


In another game, Mwiki overcame AIC Nyayo 2-0. Margaret Nyawira and Joan Muria scored for Mwiki.


In the boys’ category, 2022 national champions St Anthony’s Kitale started their bid to reclaim their title on a positive note after beating debutants Hospital Hill 3-1. Duncan Meli grabbed a brace for St Anthony’s while captain Kelvin Onyango added the third goal. Zaheer Suleiman scored the consolation for the debutants.


St Anthony’s coach Kevin Lugalia said: “I’m happy for the win. I want to take a game at a time. I’m looking forward to the next game.”


His Hospital Hill counterpart John Kaloti said: “The boys suffered from stage fright but I’m impressed on how thet played in the second half.”


In another game, Ringa Boys battled to a barren draw against last year’s bronze winners St Charles Lwanga.  In boys’ handball, Nyanza’s champions Manyatta overpowered Matiliku 39-23 in the opening game while Nairobi’s Highway High School walloped North Eastern’s Highway 53-12 in a one-sided game.


In the opening rugby 15s game, Upper Hill from Nairobi overcame Mangng’u High School 28-5 in a game that was played at Shimi la Tewa High School.


In boys’ basketball, Dagoretti High upset defending champions Sr Aggrey 95-71 while Friends School Kamusinga beat Pioneer 86-46.
