Mining CS Hassan Joho/XMining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho has affirmed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will field candidates in all elective positions in the 2027 general elections, with the exception of the Presidency, which he said remains under negotiation.
Speaking on Friday during a press briefing during Eid-ul-Fitr prayers and celebrations, Joho affirmed the party’s readiness to mount a nationwide political contest, positioning ODM as a key player in the upcoming polls.
“I want to assure that ODM as a party will field candidates in all positions. The only one we are negotiating on is the Presidency," he said.
"But in terms of other candidatures, as ODM, there shall be candidates."
The remarks signal ODM’s strategy to maintain a strong grassroots and parliamentary presence while leaving room for potential political realignments at the top of the ticket.
The party, currently led by Oburu Odinga, has in recent years been at the centre of shifting alliances, making the presidential race a subject of ongoing consultations.
Joho emphasised that the party will actively campaign for its candidates nationwide.
“We shall vigorously campaign for our candidates, including myself as a member of the party. I may not hold a position today, but you remember I am a founding member, and I was a national organising secretary and served as Raila Odinga’s deputy for ten good years,” he stated.
Joho also sought to dispel concerns about internal divisions, affirming that ODM remains united and a formidable force in Kenya’s political landscape.
“The party belongs to us, the people. It’s our party, and we will do anything to support and vehemently defend it,” he added.
His statement comes amid heightened political activity and growing speculation over alliances under the broad-based arrangement, as leaders position themselves ahead of the next election cycle.
Joho has been largely aligned with the Linda Ground movement, while a rival faction—fronted by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino—has been pushing the Linda Mwananchi agenda, highlighting emerging divisions within ODM.
Later in the day, Joho joined Muslim faithful for Eid prayers at the Ummu Kulthum Mosque in Mombasa, accompanied by Mombasa County Assembly Speaker Aharub Khatri, family members, and other leaders.
In a message shared after the prayers, he reflected on the significance of Eid-ul-Fitr, describing it as a moment of unity, compassion, and renewal.
“As the echoes of prayer rose in unity, they carried with them not only devotion but a renewed commitment to compassion, justice and shared humanity,” he said.
He extended his wishes to the Muslim community, praying that the lessons of Ramadan translate into enduring virtues and that the occasion brings peace and joy.
