Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has inspected the progress of the Tezo Affordable Housing project in Kilifi North Constituency, terming the initiative a key pillar in job creation and economic empowerment for young people.
Speaking during the tour, Kindiki said the government’s affordable housing programme was not only addressing the housing deficit but also creating employment opportunities across the country.
“Apart from houses, this project is a job creation method for the youth across Kenya. We have 235 projects in 45 counties, and over 530,000 young people, including engineers, architects, carpenters, electricians, masons, and other workers, have benefited,” he said.
He noted that the government had awarded contracts to hundreds of firms, with the majority being local companies.
“We have awarded contracts to 800 companies to construct these houses. Out of these, 799 are Kenyan companies, and only one is a foreign contractor,” Kindiki said, adding that the move was aimed at strengthening local industry and retaining economic benefits within the country.
He urged young people to support government programmes, saying the projects were designed to provide sustainable livelihoods rather than short-term financial incentives.
Kindiki criticised leaders he accused of undermining development efforts by engaging in what he termed unproductive political activities.
“Some leaders are moving around holding useless meetings. They do not care whether the youth are employed or not; they only want to give them handouts to create disruptions at political rallies,” he said.
According to Kindiki, the government’s long-term vision is to position the youth as a driving force in national development under the leadership of President William Ruto.
“In government, our vision is to see the youth as an economic power for the Republic,” he said.
He also pointed to the visible progress of the Tezo housing project, saying residents could already see the impact of the government’s development agenda.
He announced that the initiative is expected to provide decent housing to at least 1,000 families in Kilifi North within the next year.
