Kenya’s top basketball club, Nairobi City Thunder, is preparing to compete in the Kalahari Conference of Season 6 of the Basketball Africa League (BAL), Africa’s premier professional basketball competition organized in partnership with FIBA and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The conference games are expected to take place in Pretoria, South Africa, bringing together some of the continent’s strongest clubs.
Nairobi City Thunder secured their place in the BAL Season 6 tournament after an impressive run in the Road to BAL qualifiers, where they competed against top teams from the East Division. Their strong performances during the Elite 16 stage helped them clinch qualification and represent Kenya once again on the continental stage.

The appearance marks another significant step for Kenyan basketball. In recent years, Nairobi City Thunder has established itself as one of the most dominant teams in the Kenya Basketball Federation Premier League. The club has won back-to-back national titles and has consistently represented Kenya in continental competitions.
Founded in 1998 as NSSF Stars, the team later rebranded to Nairobi City Thunder and has grown into a powerhouse in local basketball. The club plays its home games at the Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena in Nairobi.
Thunder made history when they became the first Kenyan club to qualify for the BAL, highlighting the growth of the sport in the country. Their participation has also helped place Kenyan basketball on the African map.
In the Kalahari Conference, Nairobi City Thunder will face strong opposition from top African clubs, including Al Ahly Benghazi of Libya, Al Ahly from Egypt, APR BBC from Rwanda, and Dar es Salaam from Tanzania.
The teams will compete in a round-robin format, with the best-performing sides advancing to the BAL playoffs later in the season.
