Renowned Kenyan media personality Ciru Muriuki has shared candid details about a painful past relationship, revealing how she once discovered that a boyfriend she trusted was simultaneously involved with several other women.
Speaking during an appearance on the Iko Nini Podcast, Ciru reflected on the experience with honesty and humour, describing it as a major moment of “character development” in her life.
The broadcaster explained that the betrayal came to light after her then-boyfriend — who was studying to become a doctor — lied to her about his medical school graduation celebrations.
The Graduation Party That Exposed the Truth
According to Ciru, she had already dropped out of medical school at the time they were dating, while her boyfriend had repeated a class but was still graduating alongside his sister, who was also completing her medical studies.
On the day of the celebrations, he downplayed the event, telling her it was simply a quiet family dinner without any party. Trusting his explanation, Ciru said she did not question the situation at the time.
However, she later discovered that there had in fact been a full graduation celebration — and she had not been the only girlfriend in his life.

“We Were Many Assistants”
Recalling the moment she realised the truth, Ciru painted a vivid picture of the chaotic scene at the party.
“They were crying in different corners,” she said. “Then there was the main girlfriend who was taking photos and feeding him cake. That’s when I realised I was not alone.”
She humorously described herself and the other women as “assistants” to the primary girlfriend.
“We were so many assistants — like assistants to other assistants,” she joked, while reflecting on how confusing the situation had been.
Looking back, Ciru said she even wondered whether her boyfriend deliberately kept her away from the party to spare her embarrassment or simply because she ranked low in his “hierarchy” of partners.
Reflecting on the Relationship
Despite the betrayal, Ciru admitted that the man had certain qualities that made the relationship compelling at the time.
“He was a very good-looking man and had vibes. You know Luo men are talented,” she said, acknowledging how that may have contributed to overlooking red flags.
After the breakup, she spent time reflecting on the relationship and questioning why she had accepted certain behaviours.
Ultimately, she described the relationship as unhealthy and said the experience taught her important lessons about self-worth, trust, and setting boundaries.
Ciru Muriuki’s Journey Through Love and Loss
Ciru Muriuki is a veteran broadcaster and former presenter at BBC, known for her outspoken views on relationships, feminism and personal empowerment.
Her reflections on past relationships come during a period of profound personal loss. In February 2024, her fiancé, celebrated Kenyan actor Charles Ouda, passed away at the age of 38 shortly after the couple became engaged.
Ciru had previously spoken about their reconnection three years earlier, describing a “cosmic pull” between them and recalling his proposal as one of the most beautiful moments of her life.
Following Ouda’s death, she was also forced to confront cruel online rumours labelling her a “red thigh” — a superstitious belief in some Kenyan communities suggesting that women whose partners die are somehow cursed because of past relationships.
Rather than allow the rumours to define her, Ciru addressed the claims with humour in a TikTok video.
She has also previously spoken about losing another former partner in 2017, explaining how those experiences reshaped her perspective on life, grief, and the importance of authenticity.
