Families who lost loved ones in the recent floods in Nairobi have begun the painful journey of laying them to rest.

This is after the Mike Sonko-led Sonko Rescue Team transported the first five bodies to their rural homes.

The team ferried the bodies on Wednesday to West Pokot, Eldoret, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and Mtito Andei, marking the start of a coordinated effort to help bereaved families give their kin a dignified send-off.

The move follows a pledge by Sonko, the leader of the National Economic Development Party, to clear pending morgue bills, provide coffins, and facilitate the transportation of all the 27 flood victims who died during the devastating rains in the capital.

Speaking while meeting grieving families, Sonko said arrangements are underway to transport the remaining 22 bodies once relatives finalize burial plans in their respective rural homes.

“Our team will continue working with the families to ensure every victim is returned home and accorded a dignified burial,” he said.

The floods, which swept through several low-lying estates in the city, left a trail of destruction and grief, with dozens of families still struggling to come to terms with the loss of their loved ones.

Sonko also urged political leaders to avoid turning the tragedy into a political contest, calling instead for unity and compassion as the country responds to the disaster.

He emphasized that the focus should remain on supporting affected families and finding lasting solutions to the persistent flooding that continues to threaten lives in parts of Nairobi.
