Kenyan influencer Lydia Wanjiru has spoken out about the risks of cosmetic surgery following the tragic death of TikTok personality Elena Jessica, urging people considering aesthetic procedures to prioritise research and safety.
Lydia Wanjiru Speaks After Elena Jessica’s Death
Wanjiru addressed the issue as conversations intensified online after news emerged about Elena Jessica’s passing. The influencer, who has previously been open about undergoing cosmetic procedures herself, said she feels a responsibility to speak up whenever such incidents occur.
“As someone who has done BBL, liposuction and a tummy tuck and publicly shared my journey, sometimes I feel obliged to speak or comment when these things start trending,” she said.
Her remarks came as many social media users debated the safety of cosmetic procedures and the pressures driving people to undergo body enhancement surgeries.
The Human Cost of Cosmetic Surgery
For Wanjiru, the most painful part of such tragedies is the loss of life itself.
“It is really sad to hear someone has died,” she said.
She added that while discussions often focus on the medical details of a procedure, the real tragedy lies in the fact that a person has lost their life.
“The procedure they died doing or the medical issue that caused it… at the end of the day it is still someone losing their life,” she explained.

Responding to Social Media Arguments
Wanjiru also addressed a common argument she often sees online whenever cosmetic surgery complications make headlines.
She noted that some people attempt to downplay the risks by comparing them to other forms of death.
“Sometimes in the comments you see people saying people die through floods, people sleep and die, people get sick and die,” she said.
While acknowledging that medical procedures always carry risks, she stressed that avoidable dangers should still be taken seriously.
“A lot of people die on theatre tables, and it doesn’t always have to be cosmetic surgery,” she added.
Her Advice: Do Proper Research
Despite recognising that surgery always involves some risk, Wanjiru believes that lack of research is one of the biggest mistakes people make.
She revealed that before undergoing her own procedures, she spent significant time researching doctors and hospitals.
“When I was planning my procedures, I went for consultations, met the doctors, visited the hospitals and looked at how well equipped the facilities were,” she said.
She also encouraged people to examine whether a medical facility can properly handle emergencies.
“If the hospital is not equipped in case of an emergency, how will they take care of you?” she asked.
According to her, staffing is just as important as equipment.
“If the hospital doesn’t have enough nurses — night nurses, day nurses, theatre staff — how will they take care of you?” she said.
She warned that many people make the mistake of choosing “just any hospital” without conducting proper background checks.
What Happened to Elena Jessica
The renewed conversation about cosmetic surgery risks comes after the death of TikTok personality Elena Jessica, whose passing shocked many of her followers online.
Elena, a social media influencer known for her glamorous lifestyle content, reportedly died following complications linked to a second Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery.
According to reports, the procedure was performed on February 6 at a cosmetic surgery clinic in Nigeria. Days later, she began experiencing severe pain and medical complications related to the surgery.

Medical tests reportedly revealed alarming health indicators, including extremely high white blood cell counts and dangerously low blood levels, forcing doctors to administer several blood transfusions.
Her condition continued to deteriorate despite further procedures to remove infected fat and attempts to stabilise her health. She was transferred between several hospitals as doctors tried to manage a serious infection caused by the surgery.
At one point, Elena’s family reportedly struggled to secure an intensive care unit bed and spent large amounts of money on treatment, even selling property and appealing to well-wishers for financial help.
Despite these efforts, the influencer eventually succumbed to the complications weeks after the surgery, leaving family, friends and fans devastated.
