Kisii School emerged as the new Kisii School boys basketball champions in Kisii County, dethroning multiple-time champions Nyanchwa Boys in a repeat final held at Moi High School, Gesusu, on Monday afternoon.

The thrilling contest ended 102-89 in favour of Kisii, with captain Sam Otieno leading the charge. The final was a continuation of Friday’s clash, which had been halted due to crowd trouble. Kisii School dominated early, building a 58-36 lead at halftime.

Nyanchwa Boys attempted a comeback in the second half, outscoring Kisii 25-20 in the third quarter and 28-24 in the fourth, but it proved insufficient to overturn the deficit.

Nyanchwa Boys coach Kepher Mogire graciously acknowledged Kisii’s superiority. “It was a tough match, and as Nyanchwa Boys, we accept the result. We shall now support Kisii as they represent the county at regional championships,” he said.

Kisii School coach Gilbert Okumu was equally pleased with his team’s performance. “We were the better team this time. It was a heated final, and I’m proud of the boys,” he noted. Okumu has already shifted focus to the upcoming Nyanza regional championships.

“It will not be easy, but our focus is to reach the final. The only team I’m afraid of is St Mary’s School, Yala,” he remarked.

The basketball victory completes a remarkable triple for Kisii School, who on Friday retained the rugby 15s and handball county titles. Games master Dennis Omwansa expressed confidence ahead of the regional Term One championships at Kisumu School from March 17 to 21.

“We have started the year very well, lifting three titles. All these are joint efforts from the school, coaches, and students. Our training has been intense, and the school has supported the teams to play several friendly games with strong teams,” he said.

Omwansa added, “In Kisumu, we are going to be a formidable team at the regional level. Our focus is to have the three teams playing at the national level.”

Elsewhere in the region, Tuk Jowi Girls and St Joseph’s Rapogi retained the Migori County term one basketball titles. Tuk Jowi overcame Kadika Girls 43-37, while St Joseph’s defeated Kanga High 73-50.

In handball, Manyatta High retained the boys’ title after beating Rapogi 24-18, while Kadika Girls claimed the girls’ trophy with a 41-11 win. Friends School Anjego secured the rugby 15s title for the third consecutive year, overpowering Rapogi 27-3.
