Agoro Sare coach Paul Odock with Seth Omondi after they retained the county title for the ninth consecutive year/ANGWENYI GICHANA

Agoro Sare High School extended their dominance in boys’ basketball after clinching the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Homa Bay County title for a ninth consecutive year.

Agoro Sare defeated Our Lady of Mercy Ringa Boys High School 80–71 in a repeat final staged at Homa Bay High School. The match had been restarted after the initial final played at Ringa Boys High School on Friday was abandoned due to crowd trouble.

By the time the game was halted, Agoro Sare—coached by Paul Odock and Joshua Rume—were leading 10–2 in the fourth minute of the first quarter. Speaking after the victory, Odock said their strategy was to maintain the advantage once they took the lead.

“We opened an eight-point lead, and Ringa were chasing the game throughout. This helped us retain our title. We also have squad depth because all our 12 players can play,” he said.

He added that the team remained composed despite losing key players to fouls. “Our big man, Moses Anan and captain Charles Reagan were fouled out, but we held on to win the title.”

Anan scored a game-high 18 points for Agoro Sare while assistant captain David Okello added 12. For Ringa Boys, Ibrahim Mwarasa and Ryan Trevor scored 11 points each.

“Ringa Boys is a good team and gave us a run for our money,” Odock noted. He also praised the school’s chief principal, Isaac Okeyo, for his strong support of the team. Looking ahead, Odock said the team is determined to dominate the Nyanza Region basketball scene.

The school has won two regional titles but finished as runners-up in seven finals. “We are targeting our third regional title. We are clear favourites. We have lost many finals, but we want to use the experience and maturity to dominate,” he said.

He also revealed that the team has a promising future, with a talented group of 20 Grade 10 players expected to form the core of the squad in the coming years.

In the girls’ category, Asumbi Girls High School retained the basketball title after thrashing Nyangajo Secondary School 63–06. Asumbi also clinched the girls’ hockey title following a narrow 1–0 victory over last year’s champions Andingo Secondary School.

In boys’ hockey, Ringa Boys retained the title with a commanding 3–0 win over Oriwo Boys High School. Both teams will represent the county at the regional championships. Meanwhile, Gendia High School stunned Agoro Sare 6–0 to clinch their maiden rugby 15s title. The regional championships will be held at Kisumu School from March 12 to 21.
