Tusker's forward Stephen Etyang in a past action /HANDOUT

Tusker FC head coach Julien Mette has delivered a brutally honest verdict on his side despite a promising two-match winning streak that has steadied the Brewers after a turbulent spell.

The good run includes a morale-boosting 2–0 victory over Bidco United in the FKF Mozzart Bet Cup, a result that booked Tusker a place in the Round of 16 and extended their recent resurgence across competitions.

The win made it two victories in the three matches the French tactician has overseen since arriving at the Ruaraka-based club.

But even as results begin to improve, Mette is refusing to be carried away.

“We are happy with the result, but honestly, the performance was not perfect. There are still many details we must improve.”

The 12-time champions have looked more organised since Mette took charge following the exit of former coach Charles Okere, with the team slowly rediscovering the discipline that once defined their dominance in the FKF Premier League.

Still, the Frenchman insists results alone will not define progress.

“Winning gives the players confidence, especially after a difficult period for the club.”

Tusker’s victory over Bidco was secured by goals from Ghanaian forward Selasie Bless Akai and striker Stephen Etyang, whose second-half strike sealed the result and ensured safe passage into the next round.

Yet even in victory, Mette believes his side must learn to dominate matches more convincingly.

“We must learn how to control games better. At some moments, we allowed the opponent too much space.”

Working alongside assistant coach Anthony 'Modo' Kimani, the French tactician has been pushing the team toward a more structured and collective style of play.

“My philosophy is simple — the team must work together in attack and in defence.”

Mette says he is beginning to see signs that the players are slowly embracing the new ideas within the dressing room.

“I can see the players trying to understand the system and the mentality we want to build.”

Tusker have also added steel to their squad with the arrival of Congolese goalkeeper Pavelh Ndzila and left-back Servel Akouala as part of the club’s effort to rebuild stability.

Even so, Mette believes consistency will ultimately determine whether the Brewers can mount a meaningful push this season.

“In football, the most important thing is consistency. One good match is not enough.”

He warned that the team must remain focused as they attempt to build momentum across both league and cup competitions.

“We must continue to work hard. Every match is an opportunity to show progress.”

Forward Stephen Etyang, whose goal against Bidco wrapped up the win, admitted the team is slowly regaining belief.

“I am happy to score and help the team win. For a striker, goals are always important, but the most important thing is the result.”

The attacker credited the new technical bench for bringing renewed energy into the squad.

“The coaches have brought a new mentality to the team. Everyone is working hard and pushing each other to improve.”

Etyang also emphasised that Tusker’s improvement has been driven by teamwork rather than individual brilliance.

“This is not about one player. Everyone in the team is contributing and fighting for the badge.”

As Tusker prepare for a demanding run of fixtures, the striker says the players are determined to keep building momentum.

“We have started to build confidence, but we must stay humble and keep working.”

For Mette, the message remains simple — the Brewers must remain disciplined and grounded if they are to reclaim their status as a powerhouse of Kenyan football.

“If we keep working with discipline and humility, this team can become very strong again.”
