Road safety tips during heavy downpours/ROSA MUMANYI

Motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution on the roads during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce the risk of accidents and traffic disruptions.

According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), heavy downpours can lead to reduced visibility, slippery roads and flooding, which increase the chances of crashes.

Drivers are advised to slow down and maintain a safe following distance to allow enough time to react to sudden stops or hazards.

Overtaking during heavy rain or fog should also be avoided as poor visibility makes it difficult to judge distances and oncoming traffic.

KeNHA also warns motorists not to attempt driving through flooded sections of the road, as water levels can rise quickly and sweep away vehicles.

Motorcyclists and cyclists are encouraged to wear reflective gear to enhance visibility in wet and dark conditions.

Pedestrians should also take precautions by avoiding walking close to fast-moving traffic.

Authorities note that heavy rains may cause traffic delays, temporary road closures and higher accident risks, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
