Action between BB Bread and AFC Leopards/AFC LeopardsFifth-tier minnows BB Bread FC are bracing for the biggest challenge in their club’s history: a Round of 32 clash against Kenya’s most decorated club, Gor Mahia, at Nyayo Stadium this Sunday.
The Kayole-based side shot into the national spotlight with a shock 4–3 penalty win over AFC Leopards following a thrilling 2–2 draw at Police Sacco on February 8. But taking on Gor Mahia — a club steeped in silverware and history — presents a far stiffer test.
Gor Mahia winger Samuel Kapen warned against underestimating the underdogs. “Every team in this cup is dangerous. BB Bread beat Ingwe, so we must respect them, but our focus is clear — we want to progress,” he said.
Kapen highlighted the importance of composure, tactical discipline, and midfield control against a disciplined and quick-countering BB Bread.
Head coach Charles Akonnor echoed caution, praising BB Bread’s organisation and discipline.
“They executed their penalty shootout perfectly against AFC Leopards. We must not take them lightly,” he said.
Akonnor stressed precision, balanced attacking and defending, and maintaining intelligence and intensity throughout the match. BB Bread coach Ajastine Okoba exuded confidence.
“Our boys are ready. Playing Gor Mahia is what we dreamt of when we started this club,” he said.
Okoba emphasised tactical discipline, patience, and compact defending as keys to upsetting a technically superior opponent.
“Our strategy is simple: stay compact, counter smartly, and take our chances when they come. We must be fearless,” he added.
The encounter carries immense symbolic significance for BB Bread, representing their community of Kayole and the ambitions of a club steadily carving its name in Kenyan football.
“We’re making history. The players know it, and they’re ready to give everything for our community,” Okoba said.
The Round of 32 promises thrilling action across the country. Saturday features Zetech Titans vs KCB, Shabana vs Muhoroni Youth, and defending champions Kenya Police vs TBM Health. Other matches include Bandari vs Bumbani Stars, Ulinzi Stars vs Zoo FC, and Kariobangi Sharks vs KU Hardnuts.
Sunday’s marquee clashes see Kuta Collections face KSG Ogopa at 1 pm, followed by the headline Gor Mahia vs BB Bread at 3:30 pm. Kakamega Homeboyz, Posta Rangers, Murang’a SEAL, and Nairobi United also host fixtures in the late afternoon.
As BB Bread prepare to face Kenya’s football giants, the match promises drama, unpredictability, and the quintessential magic of cup football — where minnows dream big and every second counts.
