Posta Rangers' Eliud Lokuwam in action against Gor Mahia's Byrne Omondi/HANDOUT
Gor Mahia’s relentless march atop the SportPesa Premier League slowed but did not stall on Thursday evening, as Posta Rangers battled to a gritty 1-1 draw at Nyayo Stadium. The result ended K’Ogalo’s seven-match winning streak, yet their grip on the summit remains firm in a tightly contested title race.
Under the fading Nairobi sun, Gor Mahia dominated possession, shifting the ball from flank to flank in search of openings. But despite controlling long stretches of play, clear-cut chances were scarce. Posta Rangers executed a disciplined plan: defend deep, deny space between the lines, and frustrate the champions. For long periods, it worked to perfection.
Captain Alpha Onyango, the midfield metronome, acknowledged the challenge posed by Posta Rangers.
“We knew they would come here organised and determined,” he said. “Matches like this test your patience and your character.”
Gor Mahia had entered the fixture on the back of seven straight victories that had opened daylight between them and archrivals AFC Leopards. Thursday’s contest served as a reminder that momentum in a title race can be fragile. “Every team raises their level against us,” Onyango observed. “When you are leading the table, you become the target. Everyone wants to be the side that stops you.”
Despite the draw, Onyango refused to frame it as a major setback.
“Of course, we always play for three points, especially at home,” he said. “But a point is not the end of the world. It keeps us moving, and we remain in control of our destiny.” He highlighted the squad’s unity as a defining strength. “The spirit in this dressing room is strong. We push each other in training, we hold each other accountable, and that’s why we’ve been consistent.”
He also offered a note of caution.
“The league is unforgiving,” he said. “If you lose concentration for even a few minutes, you pay for it. This is something we must keep improving.” Onyango emphasised the responsibility of wearing the Gor Mahia badge. “This badge demands excellence. We don’t hide from that pressure. We embrace it.”
For Posta Rangers, the point was a morale booster. Veteran midfielder Jackson Macharia anchored their midfield, breaking up play and launching quick counters. “We respected Gor Mahia, but we were not afraid,” he said.
“Everyone sacrificed—from forwards tracking back to defenders putting their bodies on the line. It was a team effort.”
After 22 matches, Gor Mahia lead the table with 49 points and a goal difference of +23. AFC Leopards trail with 43 points, while Shabana sit third on 40, followed by Kakamega Homeboyz on 38 and Kenya Police FC on 37. Posta Rangers remain 13th with 24 points, yet Thursday’s result proves they can compete when organised and disciplined.
For K’Ogalo, the draw preserves a 12-match unbeaten run, underscoring that in a title race, resilience matters more than perfection. Onyango summarised the mood succinctly: “We would have loved to celebrate another win, but championships are built over months of hard work. We stay calm, we stay focused, and we keep fighting.”
The streak may have ended, but Gor Mahia’s mission continues.
