The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has temporarily closed sections of Karura Forest after rivers within the forest burst their banks following heavy rainfall.

In a public notice, KFS said the flooding forced the closure of several popular trails and recreational areas to ensure visitor safety.

“Due to the ongoing heavy rainfalls, rivers flowing through Karura Forest have burst their banks,” KFS stated.

The agency said some paths have been affected by the flooding and will remain closed until further notice.

“As a result, paths leading to the caves, waterfalls, bridges and Ruaka picnic site have been closed off. No member of the public is allowed to get into that area until further notice,” KFS added.

Karura Forest is one of Nairobi’s most visited green spaces, attracting joggers, cyclists, tourists and families seeking outdoor recreation.

It features several nature trails, waterfalls, caves, and picnic sites. Key attractions include the 15-meter Karura waterfall, the historic Mau Mau caves, a bamboo forest, the lily-covered Lake, and diverse indigenous trees.

The forest also has a cafe and is home to varied birdlife.

KFS said the temporary closure is intended to protect visitors as river water levels continue to rise due to heavy rains affecting several parts of the country.

Flooded trails and fast-flowing rivers can pose serious dangers, particularly around bridges and low-lying areas. The agency urged the public to avoid the affected sections and cooperate with forest officers enforcing the restrictions.

“The public is advised to exercise caution and report to the Foresters' office for any concerns,” KFS stated.

The agency did not specify when the closed sections would reopen, noting that access will resume only once water levels subside and it is safe for visitors to use the affected paths again.
