
A new report has flagged mounting legal and structural threats facing independent media in Kenya, with journalist safety topping the list of concerns.
The study, launched in February 2026 and cited as being by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, shows that the safety and security of journalists is the most identified threat. Mis- and disinformation, financial and commercial pressure on media, and barriers to access to information also rank highly.
Other concerns include cybercrime laws, abuse of court processes, cyberstalking, unlawful surveillance, and passive governance of media freedom. Respondents also cited threats to small independent outlets and artificial intelligence as emerging risks
