James Gitonga’s medical journey has been marked by a series of painful setbacks, with six out of 10 surgeries reportedly going wrong. His first operation, performed at a private hospital in Kiambu, was meant to fix a rectal condition.
A second surgery in Kirinyaga sought to correct a fistula.
In Nairobi, a third procedure at a top private hospital created a stoma, leaving him reliant on a colostomy bag.
The fourth surgery, a reconstructive attempt at the same facility, failed. A fifth operation — reconstructive plastic surgery at a leading public hospital — also did not succeed.
The sixth procedure, aimed at reversing the stoma at another top private hospital, was unsuccessful as well.
The botched surgeries have left Gitonga enduring prolonged physical and emotional distress, highlighting the severe toll repeated failed medical interventions can have on a patient’s life.
