Once notorious as a hub of gangs and extremist radicalisation, Majengo in Mombasa has transformed into a relatively peaceful community thanks to local initiatives and youth engagement.

From 2011 to 2016, Majengo was a no-go zone. Armed gangs and extremist recruiters, including followers of the late radical cleric Aboud Rogo, terrorised residents, targeting matatu operators and recruiting youth into al Shabaab.

Heavy-handed police operations, extrajudicial killings and widespread poverty compounded the cycle of fear.

Today, the neighbourhood’s image is changing. The Majengo Community Organisation has spearheaded initiatives to reclaim public spaces and redirect youth away from crime.

Central to these efforts is the Ziwani Lasco ground, previously a crime hotspot, now secured and set for upgrade into a community stadium and madrassa.

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno praised the transformation, calling Majengo “bait al-amin” — a trustworthy place — and urged the community to maintain vigilance and support positive youth development.

Governor Abdulswamad Nassir confirmed county plans to construct the stadium and madrassa to provide safe recreational and educational facilities, addressing past vices linked to idle spaces.

Mvita MP Mohamed Machele lauded the community’s efforts but urged developers in Majengo to adhere strictly to building codes to preserve progress.

Through sustained community leadership, youth engagement and government support, Majengo is shedding its violent past, offering hope for a safer, more cohesive future.
