A majority of retirees in Kenya report positive wellbeing after leaving formal employment, according to 2024 data from the Retirement Benefits Authority.
The survey shows that 60 per cent of retirees describe themselves as generally happy. Another 46 per cent say they are enjoying life, while 36 per cent report having a strong sense of purpose in retirement.
However, the findings also highlight notable challenges. About 18 per cent say daily activities are becoming more difficult, pointing to age-related limitations.
Thirteen per cent report trouble making ends meet, underscoring financial pressures facing some retirees. One per cent say they feel isolated and lonely, while five per cent expressed other views not captured in the main categories.
Overall, the data paints a largely optimistic picture of retirement in Kenya, with most retirees experiencing satisfaction and fulfilment.
At the same time, the report signals the need for stronger social and financial support systems to address emerging health and income concerns among a section of the ageing population.
