Police are investigating an incident where a man's body was found lying in a trench at Sabaki area in Athi River, Machakos county. 

Police said the man, believed to be around 40 years of age, might have died suddenly before the matter was reported to Athi River police station on Saturday evening. 

It was reported to the station as a sudden death incident report. The deceased was identified by police officers as Simon Munyithya Mwenga.

"It was reported through phone by OCPP Sabaki that there was a dead body of an African male adult lying in a trench at Sabaki area, about 6 km north of the station.  The scene was visited by police officers from Athi River police station and DCI personnel from Subcounty Criminal Investigations Office, Athi River, in the company of CSI Mlolongo, whereby it was established that the male adult aged around 40 years was found by the public lying in a trench and informed the police," a police report scene by the Star read in part.

Police said during the search, a note bearing the name of Simon Munyithya Mwenga was recovered from the scene of the incident.

The officers processed and documented the scene before removing it to Shalom Community hospital mortuary in Athi River, awaiting an autopsy. 

Police said the body had no physical injuries when it was discovered and removed from the trench where it was lying.

Members of the public milled the scene after information of a dead body lying in a trench went round Sabaki area and its environs. 

Eyewitnesses said the man was found lying on his back with all his clothes on. The cause of his death wasn't immediately established. 

The body was removed to the mortuary using a police Land Cruiser belonging to Athi River police station. 

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives attached to the Athi River police station have launched investigations into the incident.
