Nairobi City Stars players celebrate at Gusii Stadium during the game against Gucha Stars/ANGWENYI GICHANA

Mombasa United coach Gilbert Selebwa has warned there is no margin for error as the fight for SportPesa Premier League qualification intensifies.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s clash against Darajani Gogo at Marist University in Karen, the veteran tactician described every remaining fixture as a final.

“For us, all our remaining 17 games are like finals. We must avoid mistakes and capitalise on our opponents’ errors. The race for promotion is tight — if you drop points, you are overtaken,” said Selebwa.

United have managed only three away wins this season, but the coach is targeting maximum points against the struggling Nairobi-based side. The coastal outfit won the first leg 2-1 in Mombasa.

“I know they will come guns blazing against us, but we are well prepared. Our target is maximum points. We want to extend the gap between us and MOFA to five points before we meet next weekend at home,” he added.

Selebwa strengthened his squad during the just-concluded transfer window, bringing in nine players and releasing 12 as he reshaped the team for the promotion push. “I now have a squad of 30 players, and I’m confident they will help us seal qualification,” he noted.

Mombasa United are joint top of the National Super League standings with Migori Youth on 40 points, though Migori hold a superior goal difference.

Migori Youth will be in action on Sunday against Gucha Stars at Gusii Stadium. The match was moved from Saturday due to the stadium’s unavailability.

In Saturday fixtures, Nairobi City Stars host Fortune Sacco at Gems Cambridge College in Karen. Both sides are seeking redemption after narrow 1-0 defeats last weekend — City Stars falling to Migori Youth and Fortune Sacco losing to MOFA at Kianyaga Stadium. With 17 matches to go, the promotion race is tightening — and Selebwa knows any slip could prove costly.
