Former Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri./COURTERSYFormer Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri has said that although Mt Kenya is in opposition, anyone should be allowed to sell their political agenda in the region.
During an interview on Kameme TV, Ndambiri said leaders in the region should be clear on the direction they are taking the people.
“This change—if you looked like 6 months ago, you would not have mentioned the name of President William Ruto in the Mt. Kenya region. But today you are hearing that a certain person has a rally and addressed the people and said, "I belong to the government side,” he said.
He criticised those defacing political offices branded with the colours of a different political party.
“This is not right; let someone sell the agenda and what he or she has done to the people. If you don’t want Ruto, it is ok and stay in opposition. If the other person wants Ruto, let him or her continue working with Ruto,” he added.
“All in all, we need a united Mt Kenya,” he said, noting that the region has traditionally voted as a block.
He said there are several notable leaders from the region angling for positions in the next elections, citing Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Martha Karua.
He said these key leaders from the region should start exploring how to work together with the interest of the region at heart. He said Mt Kenya was a “creator of wealth” in the country, hence the need for the region to have a stronger political voice.
He, however, warned that the region should not bank on voting numbers only, saying other regions are also coming up well in terms of population size.
“There are some regions where one man is even having five wives, and that one man ends up getting 20 children,” he said.
He noted that in the Mt Kenya region, the majority of families are getting between one and three children.
“If we don’t give birth, our numbers will continue going down, and it will reach a point, these numbers we keep on talking about are over,” he said.
He asked the region to respect and listen to former President Uhuru Kenyatta and challenged the former head of state to champion unity among leaders from the region.
“He does not want any political seat; he is visionary. Let him unite these leaders,” he said.
He termed as selfish interest the push to divide the region into Mt Kenya East and West.
“We should let Mt Kenya remain Mt Kenya,” he said.
He said leaders from the region should show direction, including which presidential candidate should be supported ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He said the people of the region should be ready to support whichever presidential candidate will be picked by the joint opposition, irrespective of tribe or where the person comes from.
Ndambiri, who served as Kirinyaga County Governor from September 2017 until August 2022 has indicated that he will be vying for the governor’s seat in 2027.
