Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz spent his Valentine’s Day away from the usual celebrity spotlight. The Bongo Flava star decided to celebrate the day of love by visiting residents in Dar es Salaam.
He chose to bypass his luxury lifestyle to meet people in their own neighbourhoods.
An Unlikely Transport Choice
The megastar took specific steps to remain unrecognised. He left his well-known fleet of luxury cars at home. He explained that his usual vehicles are too famous and would ruin the surprise for the public.
Instead, Diamond used a simple black car belonging to one of his friends to navigate the streets. This allowed him to move secretly through the city. He wanted to arrive quietly so he could surprise people without a massive crowd forming immediately.

"Today I had to go out without my usual cars because people know them too well. If they see them, the surprise will be ruined,” he said.
"Valentine's Secrets" in Tandale
The singer focused much of his time in the Tandale kwa Tumbo area. This location is significant as it is the neighbourhood where Diamond grew up before finding international fame.
He carried several red gift boxes filled with money to distribute to the residents.

Vivid scenes captured the star interacting with locals on a personal level. In one instance, he spotted an elderly woman and stopped to hand her a gift. He alighted from the car, walked to where she was seated, and joined her by sitting beside her.
He then gifted her the red box and watched her beam with happiness after unboxing it and seeing its contents.
Sharing the Love
The gifts were not just for the elderly. Diamond was seen handing out boxes to various people, including children and local leaders. In the transcripts, he is heard asking his team to pass another box to a child nearby.
The atmosphere was one of gratitude. Residents were recorded thanking the star for the unexpected gesture. One recipient told him they were very happy and loved the surprise.
"Here is another box, give it to the elder here... give this one to the child."
A Quick Getaway
Despite his efforts to remain incognito, the presence of a megastar does not stay secret for long. As word began to spread through the narrow streets of Tandale, the crowds started to grow.
The visit had to be cut short for safety and logistics. Diamond noted that they had to leave the Tandale kwa Tumbo area quickly once people realised who was inside the unassuming car.

Background on the Megastar
Diamond Platnumz is widely considered one of the most successful artists in East Africa. He is the founder of the WCB Wasafi record label.
While he is often seen in high-end fashion and expensive cars, this Valentine's Day event saw him returning to his roots. Tandale remains one of the most densely populated informal settlements in Dar es Salaam.
The event took place on 14 February. It was a departure from his usual Valentine's routine, which often involves high-profile performances or family gatherings.
This year, he chose to focus on different types of Valentine's Day surprises for common citizens.
