Gor Mahia's players acknowledge fans in a previous match/GOR MAHIA

Kericho Green Stadium will host one of the weekend’s most intriguing Kenyan Premier League fixtures as Gor Mahia travel to face APS Bomet on Sunday.

For the all-time League champions, the match carries added significance as it offers a chance to avenge the stunning 4-1 defeat inflicted by the league newcomers earlier in the season at Nyayo Stadium.

Gor Mahia sit atop the standings with 40 points, four ahead of second-placed AFC Leopards, and are keen to stretch that advantage. But memories of the heavy loss to APS linger — a result that shook expectations and announced Bomet’s arrival in the top flight.

Captain Alpha Onyango made it clear that Sunday’s fixture is about more than just three points. “That result earlier in the season hurt us deeply,” Onyango admitted. “We did not meet our standards that day, and we owe ourselves a much stronger performance this time.”

The midfielder acknowledged that APS had capitalised on Gor’s defensive lapses in the reverse fixture. “They punished every mistake we made and showed great hunger. We have analysed that game carefully and worked on correcting those errors,” he said.

Onyango stressed that the league leaders have sharpened their focus in training this week. “Preparation has been intense. The players understand what is at stake, and we are approaching this match with seriousness and discipline,” he explained.

He also emphasised the importance of maintaining their position at the summit. “We are leading the table for a reason. It is now about consistency and protecting that position,” Onyango said.

Aware of APS’s confidence, Onyango warned against complacency. “Being league leaders does not guarantee anything. We must earn every result through effort and teamwork,” he added.

The Gor captain spoke of unity within the squad. “The dressing room is focused and motivated. Everyone knows this is an opportunity to respond positively,” he said.

He further highlighted the need for clinical finishing. “We created chances in the first meeting, but failed to convert when it mattered. This time, we must be sharper in front of the goal,” Onyango noted.

Concluding his remarks, Onyango signalled his team’s ambition for a commanding display. “We are not travelling to Kericho to manage the game. We want to show authority and deliver a performance that reflects who we are,” he said.

APS Bomet, meanwhile, approach the fixture with belief rather than fear. Their 4-1 victory at Nyayo remains one of the season’s most talked-about results, and captain Chris Wilunda insists his side will not be intimidated by Gor’s stature.

“That win was not an accident,” Wilunda said firmly. “We prepared thoroughly and executed our plan well. We respect Gor Mahia, but we do not fear them.”

Wilunda acknowledged that expectations have shifted since that famous victory. “People now look at us differently. They know we are capable of competing at this level,” he said.

The APS captain revealed that his team has been studying Gor’s recent performances. “They are organised and experienced, but we have identified areas we can exploit,” he explained.

He also spoke about the advantage of playing in Kericho. “Green Stadium gives us confidence. Our supporters create an atmosphere that energises the team,” Wilunda said.

Wilunda emphasised discipline as a key factor. “Against a side like Gor Mahia, you cannot afford lapses in concentration. We must stay compact and patient,” he added.

He dismissed suggestions that the earlier result would add pressure. “Pressure is part of football. What matters is how you respond to it,” Wilunda said.

The APS skipper highlighted the squad’s belief. “Our players have grown in confidence since the start of the season. We trust our system and each other,” he remarked.

Looking ahead to Sunday, Wilunda made clear their ambitions remain bold. “We are not going into this match hoping for a draw. We want to compete strongly and prove we belong among the top teams,” he said.

With Gor Mahia holding a four-point cushion over AFC Leopards, the title race remains finely balanced. A win in Kericho would not only avenge an earlier defeat but also strengthen Gor’s grip at the summit.

For APS Bomet, another positive result against the champions would further cement their reputation as fearless competitors capable of unsettling established powers.

Onyango summed up Gor’s mindset ahead of the encounter. “The league is decided by how you respond to setbacks. Sunday is our opportunity to respond the right way,” he said.

Wilunda, equally resolute, underlined APS’s ambition. “We want to be remembered as a team that challenged the best. Matches like this define our season,” he said.

As Sunday approaches, both captains have set the tone — one seeking redemption, the other defending newfound credibility. The outcome in Kericho may well ripple across the title race.
