Siaya Governor James Orengo has maintained that Nairobi Senator is still the Orange Democratic Party Movement (ODM) Secretary General.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Orengo stressed that Sifuna remains the duly recognised holder of the office.
"As I stand here, the Secretary General of ODM is Senator Edwin Sifuna. Shall I repeat for purposes of record and for all those who can here us from all corners of this great country, the SG of Raila's party, ODM, is one Edwin Sifuna," he said.
Orengo has defended Sifuna, describing him as a loyal and proven party official who continues to legitimately speak for ODM.
Orengo said Sifuna has served the party for nearly a decade and has stood with ODM leader Raila Odinga during some of the most critical moments in the party’s history.
He noted that Sifuna played a key role in running the affairs of the party in the period between the 2017 and 2022 general elections.
"Senator Sifuna has served the party for nearly 10 years, and he has been with Raila Odinga at very critical and crucial moments, including running the affairs of the party between two elections, 2017 and 2022," he added.
Orengo emphasised that throughout Raila’s political life, and particularly during Sifuna’s tenure as Secretary General, there has never been a moment when Raila publicly rebuked or criticised Sifuna over his performance in office.
He said this record speaks to the confidence and trust Raila has placed in him.
"During the entire life of Raila Odinga and during the period in which Edwin Sifuna was the SG, there is no single moment that Raila Odinga rebuked or criticised in public in the discharge of his functions as SG," Orengo said.
The governor took issue with what he described as attempts by individuals without national legitimacy to oust Sifuna from his position as SG, saying such actions were misplaced.
He dismissed the move, reaffirming that Sifuna remains the official voice of the party, stating that he speaks for ODM and continues to do so.
"I shudder to think that mere minions, people who have got no legitimacy in the entire country, can dare talk about Edwin Sifuna. Sifuna speaks for the party, and even today, Sifuna is speaking for the party."
