The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has kicked out Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the party's Secretary General.
The decision to show Sifuna the door was reached during the Party National Executive Committee meeting held in Mombasa on Wednesday.
The party said Sifuna has been relieved SG of his responsibilities with immediate effect.
"Having deliberated on matters relating to the conduct of the Secretary General, Senator Edwin Sifuna, the NEC resolved to remove him from office with immediate effect, in accordance with party constitution and applicable laws, effective immediately," the statement read.
The NEC expressed grave concern over the rising levels of indiscipline within the party, particularly at the senior leadership level.
The committee underscored that ODM is governed by its constitution, the rule of law and collective decision-making through its duly constituted organs.
Effectively, Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo, who is one of the Deputy Secretary Generals will act in this position until a substantive holder of the office is elected.
Sifuna has been leading a rebel wing opposed to the ODM-UDA talks, deepening friction within the 20-year-old party.
Tellingly, those perceived as his allies in the NEC — including MP Amisi and Rift Valley odm stalwart Kipkorir Menjo — were on Sunday removed from the NEC WhatsApp group.
Early Wednesday, Amisi, Menjo and Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma were removed from ODM NEC.
Amisi has vowed to challenge ODM’s decision to remove him as a member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
Speaking to Radio Generation, the MP said the move is irregular and procedurally flawed.
Amisi said the party communicated his removal before the NEC formally met to deliberate on the matter.
“They have removed me from NEC, that was their target,” Amisi said.
According to the MP, he received a letter informing him of his removal and at the same time congratulating him for being a county chair.
This is the second NEC sitting since the demise of the party’s long-serving leader Raila Odinga in October last year.
In its first meeting, the committee appointed Oburu Oginga to take over from Raila, bypassing the three deputy party leaders.
