Job Ochieng during his debut La Liga appearance/JOB OCHIENG

Under the bright lights of Anoeta Stadium on Saturday evening, Job Ochieng walked onto the pitch with a calm composure that belied the historic

Coming off the bench in the 65th minute to replace Portugal international Gonçalo Guedes, the 22-year-old Harambee Stars forward made his La Liga debut for Real Sociedad in a 3–1 victory over Elche.

For Ochieng, it was more than just a first appearance in Spain’s top flight—it was the culmination of years of determination, sacrifice, and a dream nurtured far from home.

“I felt calm stepping onto the pitch, everything felt surreal, almost like a dream coming true,” Ochieng reflected.

“I knew the opportunity was massive, not just for me but for every young player back home who dares to dream of playing in Europe. To represent Kenya at this level, wearing the Real Sociedad jersey, is an honour beyond words. I could feel the energy of the fans and the responsibility that comes with this chance, and I wanted to show that every sacrifice, every challenge along the way, was worth it.”

Real Sociedad opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Luka Sučić, assisted by Guedes, before Mikel Oyarzabal doubled the advantage in the 37th. André Silva pulled one back for Elche shortly before halftime, but substitute Orri Óskarsson sealed the 3–1 win in the 82nd minute.

Ochieng earned a solid 6.6 match rating, impressing observers with his composure, tactical awareness, and ability to adapt to the demands of top-flight football in a short period on the pitch. “My journey from Ligi Ndogo FC to La Liga has been about steady growth and relentless determination,” Ochieng said.

“I left home in 2019 with big dreams, joining Maspalomas’ youth academy and later trialling with Las Palmas. Each step has been a lesson—every coach, every training session, every match taught me something new. Signing with Real Sociedad’s B team in 2025 was a pivotal moment, and now making my first-team debut proves that perseverance, preparation, and belief in your abilities truly pay off.”

Ochieng is the second Kenyan to feature for Real Sociedad, following FKF deputy president McDonald Mariga, and the third Kenyan to play in Spain’s top division, alongside Mariga and Michael Olunga. He made his Harambee Stars debut in August 2025 during Kenya’s World Cup qualifier against The Gambia at Kasarani Stadium, a 3–1 defeat.

“I love playing freely, creating opportunities, and testing myself against the best,” Ochieng said. “La Liga is unlike any league I’ve experienced—the speed, the technical demands, the tactical awareness required—it pushes you to your limits. I’ve trained physically and mentally for this, and I will continue to learn every day, every match, every minute on the pitch."

"This debut is not the end; it is the beginning of a journey where every goal, every assist, every contribution counts, not just for me but for my country."

Since moving to Spain in 2019, Ochieng has steadily climbed the ranks. After Maspalomas, he trialled with Las Palmas before joining Real Sociedad in 2022. He initially played for the C team, earned promotion to Sociedad B, and signed a two-year contract in May 2025.

Ligi Ndogo FC received a development fee exceeding Sh20 million, a milestone for the Nairobi-based academy.

A versatile forward, capable of playing as a striker or winger, Ochieng has earned praise from Spanish media for his speed, technical ability, physicality, and tactical intelligence. Comparisons have been drawn to Swedish striker Alexander Isak, another Real Sociedad graduate who rose through the club’s ranks.

“This contract and this debut are proof that dreams for young Kenyan players can come true,” Ochieng said.

“Every match is a new challenge, and I am ready to take it head-on. I will work tirelessly to earn a permanent place in the first team. Every goal I score, every pass I make, is part of building my legacy and representing Kenya on the global stage. My journey is just beginning, and I hope it inspires others to pursue their dreams, no matter how far they may seem.”
