Kenyan media personality and comedian Dr Ofweneke has sparked a heated online debate. He recently took to his Instagram account to issue a stern warning to men. The comedian, whose real name is Sande Bush, claims a new fashion trend is a spiritual trap.

He is specifically targeting the "backless dera." The dera is a traditional, loose-fitting dress popular in East Africa for its comfort. However, a new, more revealing version has recently gone viral.

According to Ofweneke, this trend is a calculated move to stop men from achieving their goals.

A Barrier to Progress

In a video shared with his followers, Ofweneke expressed deep concern for the future of male investment. He believes that every time men decide to improve their lives, a new distraction appears. He listed several areas where men are now likely to fail.

“Men will never have a chance to progress. We'll never have a chance to invest, build companies, buy land, do investments, money market, and all those things because every year when men wake up having made decisions to improve themselves and progress in life, the devil just comes up with something,” Ofweneke said.

The ‘Conniving’ New Vice

Ofweneke did not mince his words regarding the origin of the garment. He explicitly linked the backless dera to a spiritual source. He described the devil as "conniving" and always looking for a "new vice" to confuse men.

He noted that many men started the year with resolutions to go back to school and build investments. He believes those plans are now in jeopardy. The comedian stated that these dresses have been brought specifically to "distract us" and "confuse us."

“Now this year, when all men are focused, new resolutions, go back to school, build investments, and do all those things, the devil comes up with a new vice, just something new to distract men. This year, we already have something called backless daras. Backless deras are from the devil."

The 2027 Reset

The impact of this trend is so significant, according to Ofweneke, that the current year is already a write-off for many. He suggested that men have effectively given up on their 2024 and 2025 goals.

"Now we've given up until 2027. We try again," he told his audience. This implies a long-term setback caused by the visual distraction of the backless dera.

“Those things have been brought to distract us, to confuse us. We can't invest. Now, now we've given up until 2027. We try again.”
