KCB coach Robert Matano has framed Saturday’s trip to Kasarani Annex as a defining test for his team.
Ninth in the SportPesa League table with 25 points from 18 games, the bankers are coming off a narrow 2-1 defeat to Tusker that left both players and staff eager to prove they can recover quickly.
“Mathare United away is never easy,” Matano said in a pre-match press conference. “They have passionate fans, and the environment is intense. But these are the moments that define a team. We have faced challenges like this before, and we are prepared.”
The match, part of Round 19, carries extra significance for Matano and his squad. KCB have often struggled with consistency in the league, dropping points from winning positions, and leaving Matano with a mix of concern and determination.
“We are ninth on 25 points, but honestly, we should be higher,” he admitted. “These games are about character and focus. If we want to finish in the top six, we must win matches like this.”
Mathare United, sitting just three points behind in 12th place, will draw confidence from their narrow 1-0 victory over KCB in the first leg on September 26 last year.
That encounter, played at Mathare’s home ground, demonstrated the Slum Boys’ capacity to frustrate and capitalise on fleeting opportunities.
Matano is aware that the memory of that defeat lingers. “We remember that game. Mathare were well organised, competitive, and clinical. That remains in our minds. It is a reminder that we must be at our very best from the first whistle.”
Preparation for Saturday’s fixture has been meticulous. Matano and his coaching staff have studied Mathare closely, identifying opportunities to exploit moments in transition and on set pieces.
“When you look at the data, there are small openings in their defensive transitions. We need to be alert and decisive,” Matano said.
“Set pieces are another potential advantage. We have players with height and quality who can make an impact. In close games, these moments can be the difference between victory and defeat.”
For Matano, the mental aspect is equally important. “The Tusker loss hurt, but dwelling on it does no good. Football is about recovery and response. The first goal will set the tone — we must approach this match with composure and intent from the first minute.
Mathare head coach John Kamau is equally aware of the stakes and is preparing his team to use Kasarani Annex to their advantage.
“We are playing at home, and our supporters expect a fight,” Kamau said. “KCB are strong, experienced, and well-coached. But we believe in ourselves. Football at this level is about exploiting moments, and we have prepared thoroughly.”
Kamau is mindful of KCB’s potential motivation following their recent loss. “Teams coming from defeat can be dangerous, but they also present an opportunity if you manage the game intelligently,” he added.
Mathare’s scoring record this season has been modest — 11 goals from 18 matches — highlighting the need for forwards to be decisive.
“We are creating chances, but we need clinical finishing,” Kamau said. “Confidence is critical. Players must believe in their ability to convert opportunities.”
Defensively, the Slum Boys have improved, conceding only four goals in their last five outings. Yet Kamau warns that KCB’s squad contains individuals capable of punishing lapses in concentration. “We must remain disciplined,” he said. “Small errors at this stage of the season can be costly.”
With only three points separating the two sides, the fixture has the added intensity of a six-pointer. A victory for Mathare could equalise the points tally and even shift league positions depending on goal difference. For KCB, a win would reaffirm their top-half credentials and demonstrate the resilience Matano has been emphasising all week.
“Every point matters,” Matano said. “These matches are the moments where a team’s season can change. We are prepared to respond.”
As the league enters its most competitive phase, the match at Kasarani Annex promises to be a contest of both skill and mental fortitude. KCB will seek to erase recent disappointment, while Mathare United aims to leverage home advantage and replicate their first-leg success.
The game is a microcosm of the season’s broader narrative — where preparation, composure, and execution collide with history and expectation. For fans, the encounter offers drama; for players, an opportunity to define their campaign.
