The People's Liberation Party leader, Martha Karua.People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has reaffirmed her intention to run for president in the 2027 General Election, reiterating her commitment to restoring the rule of law, protecting individual rights, and reforming Kenya’s security sector.
In a statement on Thursday, Karua emphasised that she has the experience and vision needed to “turn this country around” and return it to constitutional governance.
“I will be going for the presidency in 2027, and I have already declared. I believe I have what it takes to return this country to the path of being governed under the rule of law,” she said.
The former Justice Minister framed her campaign around constitutionalism and accountability, promising to uphold civil liberties for all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation or social standing. She also stressed the importance of protecting public resources to ensure they benefit every Kenyan.
“To protect the public resources and make them work for every Kenyan,” she said, outlining her vision for transparent and equitable governance.
Security reform is another key pillar of Karua’s agenda, as she pledged to guarantee the safety of citizens in their homes and workplaces.
She condemned what she termed the misuse of disciplined forces, asserting that security agencies must protect the public rather than intimidate, harm, or kill the very people they are paid to serve.
“I will make sure that our disciplined forces work to secure the people, not to destroy, kill or harm the very people we pay them to protect,” she added.
A Senior Counsel and veteran politician, Karua has previously run for president and held several senior roles in government and opposition politics.
With just over a year to the general elections, Karua hopes to navigate potential party coalitions and alliances to strengthen her presidential bid amid an increasingly dynamic political landscape.
